Description	:	George was the son of David Butcher and Jane Boone. He married Nettie Webster about 1890 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. They were the parents of Leavica, Ella, William Jennings Bryan, and Charles. August 17, 1911 - Muscatine Journal - Missouri Valley, Iowa - Aug. 17 — George Butcher, aged 55 years, city marshal here, was shot and instantly killed at four o'clock yesterday afternoon by two tramps whom he was trying to place under arrest. The tramps had held up a brakeman on a Northwestern freight train enroute to this place. The marshal had been notified by wire and when the train arrived he proceeded to a car in which the men were stealing a ride. They both opened fire upon him and he fell dead. The murderers escaped. The sheriff was immediately notified and with a posse of one hundred men started in pursuit. Bloodhounds have been sent for. When last seen they disappeared in a corn field west of this place. It later developed there were six of the tramps, three of whom joined the posse in search of the men who did the shooting. Late it is believed the men are surrounded in a corn field, one and one-half miles south of town. It is said one of the refugees answers the description of Smitch, who recently escaped from the Anamosa prison after having shot his guard. Aug 26, 1911 - Cedar Rapids evening Gazzette - A fund for Mrs George Butcher, whose husband the deputy marshal, was shot and instantly killed one week ago Wednesday by two outlaws, is now being raised by citizens of Missouri Valley. Mrs. Butcher is left with six children, all under ten years of age, and dependent upon the widow for their support.
