(Deed Book 13, page 127). In 1805, Henry Barnhouse purchased 100 acres for $183.oo, on New Creek, adjoining John Baker. (Deed Book 14, page 315). On Aug. 15, 1809, Henry Barnhouse purchased 90 acres on New Creek. (Deed Book 16, page 233). About 1809 to 1811, Henry and Anna Barnhouse moved from Hampshire Co. VA to Monongalia Co. VA (with members of the Baker family). On Feb. 16, 1811, Henry and Anna Barnhouse (of Monongalia Co. VA), SOLD 110 acres & 90 acres, in Hampshire Co. VA for $500.oo. (Deed Book 16, page 585). On March 23, 1825, there was a deed of conveyance from William Ice to Henry Barnhouse. In 1845, Henry Barnhouse and his second wife Matilda Yost, SOLD 156.5 acres on the waters of Buffalo Creek, in Moody Hollow, Marion County (formerly Monongalia County) Virginia [near the Dragoo family]. In the 1850 census, Henry Barnhouse is living in Union township, Grant County Indiana, with his second wife Matilda, and ten of the children he had with Matilda. --------------------------------- The nine children of Henry Barnhouse and his first wife Anna Maria Baker are: Female, Male, Female, Samuel, Andrew, Catherine, Elizabeth, Maria, and Jane Barnhouse. Jane was the youngest of the nine children. ---------------------------------- Note: PLEASE, do NOT transfer this memorial to other web sites. Thanks, Nancy (Letcher) Heib. ---------------------------------- Note: We have never found a document which shows a "middle initial" for Jane, only a middle initial of "M" for her daughter Jane M. (Dragoo) Wilds. ----------------------------- Jane was born ("about" July 29th), 1813 in Monongalia County Virginia. This area is "now" part of Marion County "West" Virginia. --------------------------------- Jane was married on Nov. 20, 1833, in Monongalia County Virginia, to Ewell (nickname "Uel") Dragoo, the son of Jacob Dragoo and his wife Isabella Jones (per their marriage certificate). -------------------------------- Ewell and Jane came to "McCoy's Creek" in the "Territory of Michigan" in 1835 (with their son John Irving Dragoo), following Ewell's parents and his siblings, who came in 1834. "McCoy's Creek" later became known as Buchanan, Berrien Co. Michigan. ---------------------------------- Ewell's parents Jacob and Isabella Dragoo both died in 1838, only four years after they arrived in [Buchanan], Berrien Co. Michigan. Ewell and Jane, along with Ewell's siblings then returned to Monongalia Co. VA because the lands that they were living on were chosen as "seminary lands" (also known as "University Lands"), for the benifit of the "University of Michigan". The price put on the lands was too high, and they had to give them up, and they moved back to Virginia. ---------------------------- A few years later Ewell, Jane, and Ewell's siblings, "returned" once again to [Buchanan], Michigan. Ewell and Jane and their children (now with infant son Liberty), returned to [Buchanan], Michigan in 1844 (or in 1845 per an article on their son Tucker). They possibly came back to [Buchanan], Berrien County Michigan with Jane's brother Samuel Barnhouse, Samuel's wife Nancy A. (Upton) Barnhouse and their children. (Samuel was born Dec. 9, 1801 in Hampshire County Virginia). Samuel Barnhouse's son William Harrison Barnhouse (an officer in the Civil War), later married Ewell's niece, Isabel Dragoo. (Note: William Harrison Barnhouse and Isabel Dragoo were "both" first cousins of Ewell and Jane's son Liberty U. Dragoo). -------------------------------- The 1860 plat map of Buchanan Twp. Berrien County Michigan shows Ewell and Jane owning a farm in Sections 13 and 14 of Buchanan Township, North of Buchanan, Michigan, along the West side of the St. Joseph River (near the Islands). Jane and Ewell's siblings and children lived near them. Note: Ewell's brother John Fleming Dragoo Sr. lived next to Ewell, and John also purchased two of the Islands in the St. Joseph River, on the North side of Buchanan, Michigan, from the U.S. Government. --------------------------------- Jane's brother Samuel Barnhouse lived directly across the St. Joseph River, from Jane and her husband Ewell, in Section 13 of Niles Twp. ---------------------------------- Ewell Dragoo and his wife Jane Barnhouse had eight children, three born in Monongalia Co. VA., and five born in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan: ---- 1. John Irving Dragoo. b. June of 1834, in Monongalia Co. VA. m. #1. Louisa Hunter, Sept. 13, 1857 in Buchanan Twp., Berrien Co. MI.
