A private commital service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, followed by a 3 p.m. Memorial Service at First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Bev. T. Kennedy Jr. with Masonic rites in the church. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Joe B. Sr. and Ruth Heaton Kirby. Mr. Kirby was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, receiving a European/African/Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with four bronze stars signifying invasions. He also received the Distinguished French Citation with a Vermillion Star. After moving to Laurens, he first was employed by JP Stevens, Watts Plant as a loom fixer. From 1959-1984 he was a State Farm agent and received an honor for the best managed agency several times during this period. Mr. Kirby was a member and deacon of Laurens First Baptist Church, a choir member for 50 years, and president of the Kyzar Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Martha Franks Singers. Mr. Kirby was a member of the Laurens Lion Club, was a Mason and Shriner, and was a member of the transportation team carrying burned children to Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a member of SPEBSQSA and Tonsorial Troubadours. Mr. Kirby was on the TV show with Monty Dupe. He provided entertainment for the Miss South Carolina Beauty Pageant. He was a charter member of the ROMEO Club of Whitefords. Mr. Kirby is survived by a son, Joe H. Kirby and wife Joy, of Laurens; two daughters,Jenny K. Rourk and husband Lewis, of Elloree, and Julie K. Hobbs and husband, Steve,of Laurens; two brothers, David Kirby, of Georgia, and Richard Kirby, of Laurens; three sisters, Letherenda Chaney, Betty Vaughn, and Bobbie Gibbs, all of Laurens; also seven grandchildren, Joshua Black, Carrie Kirby, Emily Rourk, Sarah Kirby, Kimberly Hobbs,Lora Hobbs and Jay Cooke. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Kirby.
