He lived in Gross with his parents and later made his home there. At this time very little is known of John. It is said that he had his mother’s red hair. There is a copy of a registered letter receipt dated Dec 21, 1897 giving Will LaPrath as the sender with the address of his brother John in Gross, NE. John would have been almost 26 at the time. According to a 1904 Plat map of Morton Twp., NE, John owned an 1/8 section of land abutting to his older brother Hans on the south and the west. On 03/27/1905 John sold 3 parcels for 142.3 acres in Gregory Co., SD John is found in 4 Censuses: in 1880 he is with his parents In Tama Co., IA; in 1900 he is living with them near Gross, NE in Boyd Co. In both the 1910 and 1920 Censuses, he is in the same location living alone as a farmer. John died in the Hospital at Lynch, NE. He had been sick for some time. Lewis Cassidy remembered the night as they were planning to go to a teen-age dance. Anna had told them to stop in and check on John, but the nurse on seeing them sent them off to the dance without telling them that John had already died. The recorded date of death was Nov 30, 1928, witnessed by Joe Cassidy, the husband of his niece. John was buried in Gross beside his mother Margaret in an unmarked grave. Family contributions, through the help of Hans John of Dallas, SD, have since placed a marker on his gravesite.
