MCFARLAND DIES IN CAR CRASH; SERVICES MONDAY Funeral services for John Henry McFarland, 76, a Mills County native, who was killed in a two car auto accident Friday afternoon in Adams County, were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Cromwell Congregational Church with the Rev. Sheriff Lloyd Leonard of Adams County said the accident took place as McFarland was driving west and a car of Mrs. Bessie Mendenhall of Osceola was going east on 34. The cars hit nearly head on. Marks indicated McFarland may have been starting a turn off the highway into a service station driveway. Both cars were total losses, Mrs. Mendenhall was taken to the Corning Hospital. Mr. McFarland was the son of Mr. and Mrs Martin McFarland, early residents of Mills County. He was born on November 8, 1880. He made his home in Mills County until 1915 when he moved with his parents to Wisconsin. He was married on December 20, 1933 to Elizabeth Nellie Simms. They have resided near Kent since 1945. Surviving are his wife and three children; Mrs. Kenneth Meyer of St. Marys, John William McFarland of Des Moines, and Elizabeth Lenore at home. He leaves also three sisters, Miss Lenore who made her home with them; Mrs. W. M. Vestal of Villisca and Mrs. Frank Crouse of Hastings, and one brother, James Edward McFarland of Red Oak, Iowa.
