Martha Ann Shoop, daughter of Henry and Malinda Shoop, was born in Mills County, Iowa on August 20, 1854, and departed this life April 5, 1938, aged 74 years, 7 months, and 15 days at her home south of Lynnville, Iowa, Jasper County. She was one of a family of 10 children. Her parents were one of the pioneer families of southwestern, Iowa. On September 10, 1874, she was united in marriage to Martin Irvin McFarland, who preceded her in death January 8, 1936. To this union were born eight children, two sons and one daughter having passed on before. Those who are left to mourn her passing are Mrs. Wood Vestal and Mrs. Frank Crouse of Strahan; Lenore, John, and James Edward, with whom she made her home; six grandchildren, and two brothers, Wayne Shoop of Laurel Montana and Daniel Shoop of Wallhill, Nebraska. She has been a sufferer from arthritis for the past five years and confined to a wheel chair. In al her suffering she was patient and uncomplaining, always trusting in her Savior and always, until age and infirmities prevented, helping to lighten the burdens of others. She gave to six motherless children a home and love, besides rearing her own. In her youth she united with the Untied Brethren Church and remained a member until the dissolution of the church after which she was affiliated with the Methodist Church, and lived a constant life in its faith. Short services were held at her home in Lynnville on Friday morning. Serving as pall bearers were Grandsons, Clifford, Franklin, and Donald Vestal and Nephews Henry McFarland and Harry Fiburn and Grandson, Arthur Chruchman.
