Mrs. Mary (Tinlin) Thompson born in Jedburg, Scotland, July 31, 1848. Her parents, James and Jeannette (Scott) Tinlin, came to this country July 1863, during the dark days of the great civil war, and located on the farm of Rev. Easton at Scroggsfield. Of this family the mother died July 14, 1880, and the father October 26, 1890. Of nine children of this family five have crossed to the eternal home. The surviving members are; James and Thomas Tinlin, of Wattsville; Mrs. Helen Allmon, of Bergholz, and George S. Tinlin, of Carrollton. The deceased, when about 15 years of age, became a member of the Scroggsfield United Presbyterian Church, under the pastorate of Rev. Easton, a relative and native of Scotland. November 12, 1868, she was united in marriage to James M. Thompson. Shortly after the marriage she became a member of the Harlem Presbyterian Church and for over a half century she was a faithful member and tried to live the "Christian life," To the union four children were born; Dr. William S. Thompson, of Girard, who departed this life October 10, 1917; Laura M. White, of Harlem Springs, Jeannette Noble, of Carrollton, and John M. Thompson, of Youngstown. For a number of years she was afflicted with rheumatism and May 6, 1919, she was stricken with paralysis that left her a cripple, and ended her active life. On June 28, 1920, she had a stroke of that dreaded disease, apoplexy, which ended her life June 30. As a neighbor she "lived in a house by the side of the road and was a friend to man." Her kind ministrations in birth sickness and death will linger long in the memory of her neighbors. Her birthday verse was Proverbs 31:31: "Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates."
