Mary Hosterman was born November 1, 1827, and died November 24, 1912, aged 85 years and 23 days. She was married June 1, 1847, to William Slates. To this union were born 9 children, 3 of whom survive; Lineus and N. E. Slates, of Kilgore, and Laura M. Steeves, of Loudon Twp., in whose home she died. She united with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kilgore, May 27, 1843, and led a very upright, christian life. She was loved and esteemed by all. She was totally blind for 14 years and was unable to walk for ten years. She was a very patient sufferer, never making a murmur or complaint. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hosterman and was born in this country. She was one of 10 children, 4 half brothers and 5 half sisters. Those surviving are John Hosterman of Jewett; Robert and Frank, of Kilgore; Margaret Neighbors, of Kilgore, and Ellen Simmons, of Harlem. Interment was made Tuesday at Kilgore, the service being conducted by her pastor, Rev. Lutz. Mary's obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, December 13, 1912. Mary Slates was born November 1, 1827, and died November 24, 1912; aged 85 years, 23 days. She was the oldest daughter of Peter and Catherine Hosterman of Kilgore. Was married to William Slates June 1, 1847, who departed this life June 6, 1893. To this union were born nine children, of whom six have preceded her to the better world. The surviving ones are Laura E. Slates, and Lineous and Nelson E. Slates, all of Kilgore. She died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Steeves, where she spent the last 18 years of her life. Interment was made in the Union Cemetery at Kilgore. She became a member of the Lutheran Church at Kilgore on May 27, 1843, and led a very true and Christian life. She was loved and esteemed by all who knew her. She had been totally blind for 14 years and unable to walk for more than ten years. She was a very patient sufferer, never making a murmur or complaint.
