WIDOW CLAIM FOR INCREASE OF PENSION State of Ohio, County of Carroll, On this 20th day of October, 1866, personally appeared before me, Clerk of the Court of Common Please, a Court of Record in and for the County and State aforesaid, Mary M. Harding a resident of Loudon Township in the County of Carroll and State of Ohio, who, being duly sworn, makes the following declaration, in order to obtain the pension provided by the act of Congress approved July 25, 1866. that she is the widow of Phillip Harding, deceased, who was a Private in Company A. in the 186th Regiment of Ohio Infantry Volunteers in the War of 1861; that she is in receipt of pension certificate No. 83201 at $8.00 per month and was last paid to include September 4th, 1866, at the Cleveland, Ohio, agency. She makes this declaration to obtain the increase pension to which she is entitled under the act of Congress approved July 25th, A.D. 1866, for the following named children of hers, left her by her said husband at the time of his death, which were under 16 years of age, at the date of the passage of said act, and were then living, viz; John W. Harding born December 19th, 1857, and Martha J. Harding, born January 4th, 1864. She further swears that she has not remarried since the death of her said husband, nor has she abandoned the support of any one of the children above named, nor permitted any one of the same to be adopted by any other person or persons as his, her or their child, but that said children have resided with her since the death of her husband and now reside with her at the above place. And she hereby appoints William McCoy of Carrollton, Ohio, her attorney to prosecute her claim, and receive her pension certificate when issued. My Post Office address is Kilgore, Carroll County, Ohio, signed in the presence of Solomon Slates and Hattie Pitt. her Mary X Harding mark Also, personally appeared before me, Solomon Slates and Hattie Pitt, residents of Loudon Township, Carroll County, and State of Ohio, to me well known as credible persons, who being duly sworn, declare, that they were present and saw said Mary M. Harding make her mark to the foregoing declaration, and that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said applicant, and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; and they further state that they know, from personal knowledge, that the above-named children are the children of the applicant and her said deceased husband, and that they are still living; and that they have no interest in this claim, either present or prospective, and that they are not concerned directly or indirectly in its prosecution, and that they know the names and dates of birth above given by the applicant to be the names and dates of birth of said children. Sworn and subscribed to before me, this 20th day of October, 1886; and I hereby certify that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim. And that the contents of the above was made known and explained to applicant and witnesses before signing. Charles Rukenbrod The State of Ohio, Carroll County, On the 25th day of August A.D. 1866, before me Josiah Scott, Justice of the peace in and for said county and state, by law authorize to administer oaths for general purposes personally appearance, George W. Long and Samuel Lucas, of lawful age, residents of Carroll County and State of Ohio, and to me will known, who being duly sworn according to law, an their respective oaths say that they were members of Company "A" of the 186th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, that they were acquainted with Philip Harding who was a Private in said Company for several years before he entered the service, and that for the time he entered the service till his death they were ultimately acquainted with him; that before he enlisted he was in good health and of robust constitution; that while in the service and on a march from Nashville to Murfreeboro, Tennessee, their said Company was without tents, and were exposed to a severe storm of rain and snow in the month of March 1865, that of or about the 9th day of said month, the said Philip Harding with others were on picket duty, and were exposed to the inclemency of said storm during the night of said 9th of March A.D. 1865, without and tents or means of shelter; that by being so exposed to the storm of rain and snow, the said Philip Harding contracted a severe cold and fell sick and was not able for active duty after and; that continue to said exposure he was also attacked with diarrhea, and was sent to Nashville at Nashville, Tennessee where he died on or about the 29th day of July, 1865; and _________ further say that they were personally acquainted with all the facts and circumstances of his taking sick and being sent to hospital, and that they were present at the time of his death, and made the foregoing statements. Your personal knowledge, and they further say that from their acquaintance with said Philip Harding before his enlistment and up till the time he contracted the severe cold from the exposure experience, and the attack of the Diarrhea, that he was not predisposed to consumption or disease of the lungs, that he was a hard laborer before interring the service and was free from disease or disability, and considered by all his neighbors one of the heartiest and stoutest men of the community; that while in the service was prudent and careful, and that the disease of which he died was contracted while in the service and in the line of duty, and they further say that they are not interest in the Pension claim of Mrs. Mary M. Harding, widow of said Philip Harding, deceased, nor concerned in its prosecution either directly or indirectly. George W. Long and Samuel Lucas. Signed in the presence of John Stenger and Solomon Slates. Sworn to before me and subscribed in my presence, on the day and years first above written, by the said George W. Long and Samuel Lucas, whom I certify from personal knowledge, to be credible witnesses, and further that before signing the same, I made known to them the contents of said investment; and that I am not interested in the pension claim of Mrs. Mary M.
