Thompson was born in Logan County, Ohio, May 22, 1842, and came with his parents to Lee Township, Carroll County, 1843; and has resided continuously upon the old home farm, near Harlem Springs, until his death, January 8, 1901. The subject of our sketch was, early in life, afflicted with Kyphosus, or Pasterion curvature of the spine, which at that time rendered him unable to work. At about the age of 10 or 12 years he recovered the use of his limbs, but was never able to do much manual labor. During the past two years he had been afflicted with Bright's disease, which disease was the cause of his death. He was a natural mechanic, and took great pride in making his work perfect. In politics he was a Republican and was thoroughly posted upon the issues of the day. He served his township twice as clerk, and three terms as treasurer, and held the appointment as postmaster at Harlem Springs under Harrison's administration. He was a great admirer of President McKinley. When the Major first ran for Congress the deceased made his acquaintance, and as he was a close observer of human nature, he recognized in the Major the qualifications of 'a born leader' and made to him this prophetic remark, "you will some day fill the presidential chair." He was a member of the Harlem Presbyterian Church, but for five or six years past, unable to attend public service at the church. He was a great Bible student, having read the Bible through more than seven times. Was a firm believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, and accepted him as his personal Savior. He was an honored member of Kilgore Lodge, No. 342, K. of P.; Kilgore Lodge No. 513, F. and A.M.; Minerva Chapter, No. 123, R.A.M.; Canton Commandery, No. 38, K.T. But his favorite order was the Odd Fellows, being a member of Tripp Lodge, No. 491. for twenty-nine years; which order tenderly laid his body in its final residing place, to await the morning of the resurrection. Brief funeral services were held at the home by his pastor, Rev. N. K. Crowe. He was a very warm friend of the old soldiers, having three brothers in the civil war, one of which laid down his life for the flag in defense of his country. For his encouraging worlds and financial support he was made an honorary member of post No. 624 Grand Army of the Republic, an honor perhaps, not accorded to any other individual in department of Ohio. For years he has made his home with his brother Ezra, who has so kindly taken care of him. He will be greatly missed in his home and in his neighborhood. Long will his memory be cherished by those to whom his kindly ministrations came in their hours of sickness and distress. His motto was: "I expect to pass through this world but once; therefore, it there is any good thing that I can show to any fellow human being, let me do it now; let me not deter nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." The commander of Harlem Springs Post G.A.R., at the open grave, paid tribute to his memory in soldier parlance. "He has broken camp, he has pitched his tent on the other shore, As we lay our comrade down to rest let us cherish his virtues and learn to imitate them. His obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, January 11, 1901. Matthew D. Thompson, a well-known resident of Harlem, died Tuesday at the age of about 55 years. He was unmarried, and a cripple nearly all his life, having had angular curvature of the spine which unfitted him for laborious occupation. For several years he attended to bees an sold honey. He was an attentive member of the Presbyterian Church, and also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Carrollton, and a delegation of the lodge attended his funeral. He was a son of Morgan Thompson, deceased, and has three brothers living, Messrs. Ezra, James and William H. Thompson of Harlem Springs, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Zutavern of Strasburg. We knew the deceased for many years and always found him a pleasant gentleman.
