Orley was born April 12, 1917, on a farm northwest of Hiawatha, one of four sons born to Granville and Bertha (Evans) Yingling. He grew up near Hiawatha where he attended country schools. He worked for area farmers a few years before entering the service. He married Nilah VanDalsem, Dec. 25, 1941, at Hiawatha. To this union three children were born: Charles, James and Cheryl. Orley was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and honorably discharged in 1945 at the rank of PFC. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and the South Pacific. Orley returned to Kansas where he worked at the Sabetha Milk Plant prior to moving to the state of Washington to work for the YMCA. He returned to Hiawatha in 1949 and worked for Cowan Implement, Hiawatha John Deere dealer, for nine years. He later was a custodian for 19 years and a bus driver for nine years, for USD 415, Hiawatha Schools, retiring in the 1980s. He had been a resident of Oak Ridge Acres of Hiawatha since March 2006. Mr. Yingling was baptized into the First Christian Church of Hiawatha, April 1, 1951, and has been a member there since. Orley was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5210, of Hiawatha. When his sons were younger, he assisted with Cub Scouts. Orley's other interests included fishing and camping. Orley was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nilah Yingling; children, Charles Yingling, and wife, Trudy, and Cheryl Tate, and husband, Bill, all of Winfield, and James Yingling, and wife, Gayla, Gladstone, Mo; a brother, Lyle Yingling, Troy; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Pastor Bill Worcester will officiate. Military services will be conducted by 2nd BN, 130th FA, Kansas National Guard of Hiawatha at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Friday.
