Butler, civil war veteran, lawyer, teacher and farmer passed away at his home in this city Sunday afternoon following an illness of many months duration. A number of times during the past year Mr. Butler had been stricken but it was only a few days until his rugged constitution exerted itself and he would be down town again, but each succeeding attack took its toll of vitality and his last illness held him bedfast most of the time for five or six weeks, the end bringing merciful relief to a warrior who had fought the good fight and was ready for the long journey. Pierce E. Butler was born in Dublin, Ireland, January 25, 1836, being 88 years 6 months and 3 days of age at his death which occurred at the family home Sunday afternoon, July 27, 1924. In 1848, with his parents, he emigrated to America and settled in Madison, Wisconsin, where Mr. Butler was educated in the common schools. At the breaking out of the Civil War he enlisted in Company F, 111 Wisconsin Infantry and served for four years, two months and three days. His regiment was under the command of several noted generals, Halleck, McClellan, and Grant. He was with Major N.P. Banks on Red River and Major General E.O.C. Ord at Mobile, Alabama. He was in the battles of Peach Orchard, Virginia; Port Hudson, Jackson, Champon Hills Mississippi; Black River Bridge and the assault of Vicksburg, Sept. 22, 1863, and Ft. Esperanza, Texas; he had an arm broken and a wound received in the foot at Ft. Blakely, Alabama. He witnessed the fall of Mobile. After the war, Mr. Butler again took up the study of law which had been interrupted by the war, at Madison, Wisc., at the same time teaching school. In 1869 he emigrated to Iowa, and one year later to Kansas, homesteading the farm which he has owned since. Mr. Butler found Kansas still the home of the buffalo and antelope, and rather uncertain as to crops, and he continued his teaching which was as much from necessity as from choice, as times were stringent then and money hard to get. He was admitted to the Kansas bar in 1894 and was a candidate for county attorney of Cloud county in 1894, running on the Populist ticket but met defeat. He was also a candidate for state representative in 1901. Mr. Butler was a member of the Cloud county Bar Association and of the Elks Lodge of Concordia. Mr. Butler was married April 4, 1869 to Miss Mary E. Hughes to which union nine children were born, six of whom, with the mother, survive him: Mrs. Josephine Menard, Chicago, Ill.; Catherine, at home; Timothy J., Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Walter Davis, Delphos; Belle, Chicago; and Eugene, Chicago. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church, of which he was a member, Requiem Mass being sung by the Rev. Father McGrath. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery.
