Colwell had died Tuesday evening from complications following an attack of influenza was received with universal regret by the entire community. It was known that her condition had been grave for the past week, but it was hoped by her many friends that she might be able, with the aid of the skilled attendants, to recover from the attack. More serious complications developed Monday, however, and it was impossible to save this precious life. She leaves her husband, a young son and daughter, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Butler and family, and a host of friends to mourn her untimely death. Private funeral services were held at the home this morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Father McErlain and interment was made in the Glasco Cemetery. Glasco Sun, Dec. 19, 1918, page 4: Clara Butler-Colwell Clara Gwendolynn Butler, wife of Franklin J. Colwell was born on a farm near Glasco, Kansas, on August 26, 1885, and died at her home four miles east of Glasco, aged 33 years, 3 months and 14 days. Her childhood days were spent on her father's farm. She was a graduate of the Glasco high school class of 1904. After finishing her education she taught in the schools of Cloud County and the city schools of Glasco for several years. On May 8, 1907 she was united in marriage to F.J. Colwell. They had been sweethearts since early school days and with him she had lived an exceptionally happy, contented and useful life. To this union were born 2 children, Katheryn Hester, age 8 years and George Franklin age 4 yrs. The husband with both children survive her. Mrs. Colwell was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.E. Butler and leaves besides her aged father and mother, five sisters and two brothers to mourn her loss: Menard and Miss Frances Butler, of Chicago; Miss Kate and Belle Butler of Glasco and Mrs. W.E. Davis of Delphos; T.J. Butler, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Eugene Butler of the 35th Division, A.E.F. Mrs. Colwell was a conscientious woman, an ideal wife and mother. Her life was devoted to her husband and children. Her desire was ever for their welfare, comfort and happiness. She was a member of the Catholic church and was prepared for her death by receiving the sacraments and consolations of the church. Everything that human hands could do was done for her by her husband and her sisters, Misses Kate and Belle Butler, but God had called, she must answer that summons. Her death was caused from influenza after an illness of ten days. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. McEarlena and were held at the site of the grave at St. Mary's cemetery at Glasco where her remains were laid to rest. The beautiful flowers and the large number who attended her funeral were silent testimonials of her splendid character and of the high regard with which she was held in the Glasco community. Her death is sincerely and universally regretted and the heartfelt sympathy of everyone goes out to the sorrowing husband and children and to her parents and relatives.
