Butler, early Cloud County pioneers, was born January 27, 1874, on the Butler homestead southeast of Glasco, and passed away September 12, 1947, in California, after an extended illness. He spent his boyhood on the farm, leaving it to further his educational interests. He taught several terms of school at various graded schools in the community, attended college and was graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1899. He then went to Washington, D.C., to continue his studies at Columbian University where he received his Master of Laws degree in 1901 and his Doctor of Laws degree in 1902. In 1913 he was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. During the administration of Theodore Roosevelt, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney-General and took part in the Tea Pot Dome investigation. He later served for many years as a member of both the Federal Trade Commission and Interstate Commerce Commission. Until his health failed, he was engaged in the practice of law in San Francisco. Mr. Butler is survived by his widow, Dorothy; his two children, Mrs. Jeanne Dixon, Washington, D.C., and J. Godfrey Butler, Washington, D.C., who is a member of the legal department of the United States Department of Commerce. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Menard, Chicago, and Miss Kate Butler, Glasco, and one brother, Eugene G. Butler, Chicago. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock, Thursday morning, September 18, 1947, at the Griffith Funeral Home. The services were conducted by Rev. Father Bevak, and interment was in St. Mary's cemetery, Glasco, Kansas.
