Published Sausalito News January 23, 1919 Official Notice Received of Soldiers' Death Word has been received by his family that Faust Pedrotti was killed in action "over there" last October. He left Sebastopol in October, 1917, and trained at Camp Kearney. Published Sebastopol, Cal. Times January 24, 1919 Young Man Dies Going Over the Top On the 16th of January relatives were informed by telegram from the war department at Washington of the death of Private Faustino Pedrotti. The young man died very bravely going over the top on the 20th of October last. Private Pedrotti trained at Camp Kearny and was with the 15th Infantry. He left last June for overseas duty. He was born and raised at Olema, and was 30 years of age. He was the loving brother of Mrs. P. Righetti and Mrs. F. Yanner of Santa Rosa, Mrs. A. Brooks and Mrs. J. Kessack of Olema. While at Camp Kearny he made many friends, his jovial and kind disposition endeared him to all who came in contact with him. The sad news as cast a gloom over the town of Olema, where the young man spent most of his life. Published San Rafael Independent January 29, 1919 *** * * * Family history previous to death** Faustino's mother died in 1890, when he was 2 1/2 years old, and his father passed in 1895, when he was 7. He was the youngest of eight children. Older brother, Croce, died in 1897 of diphtheria. 1900 Pt. Reyes township census documents six of the orphaned siblings living together. They are enumerated by age, with the oldest being HOH; Carrie, 25, Annie, 23, Mary, 21, Addie, 18, Angelina, 16 and Faustino, 12. On September 25, 1909, Faustino, age 21, married a Native American girl, Lena Soso Martin, age 18. CDI documents Lena's middle name and mother's maiden name as Soso, however, other documents indicate Lena's maiden name is Martin, not Soso. Thru research, I believe Lena was born Marcelena Soso Martin to Rafael Martin and Maxima "Mary" Soso in Marshalls. (alt. Sousa, Sosa.) Lena Martin, age 8, is enumerated with mother Mary Martin and 4 siblings in the 1900 Pt. Reyes census. Lena's step-father is Sid Alcantra (alt. Alcantara.) 1910 Bolinas census documents Faustino and Lena living on the Robert Dickson ranch. Faustino was a "hired man" for dairy farming and butter making. The couple had a little boy and named him after Faustino's father. Per birth and death records, Angelo F. Pedrotti was born Feb. 28, 1912 and died on July 18, 1913. The death notice was also in the Marin Journal. Somewhere along the way, Faustino and Lena separated. I cannot find a divorce record and consequently no marriage record for Lena's next relationship to Ben Jacks. To add to the confusion, Lena resumed the surname of Pedrotti after splitting from Ben Jacks and her grave marker is inscribed Lena M. Pedrotti. CDI is also for Lena Martin Pedrotti. Faustino and Lena divorced by August, 1915 and presumably Lena married Ben Jacks. It is possible the couple split and Lena moved on with Ben Jacks before a divorce. When Faustino was called to war and then died in battle, perhaps the divorce proceedings were put on hold. On May 13, 1916, Melvin William Jacks was born to Lena and Ben Jacks. June 5, 1917, Faustino's WWI registration documents his work and home are in Loyalton, Sierra county. He is married and supports his wife, does not list any children and claims no exemption from draft. October, 1917, Faustino left for Camp Kearney. April 9, 1918, Frances Eleanor was born to Lena and Ben Jacks. October, 1918, Faustino died in battle. There was no mention of Faustino's wife in any of the death announcements, even though all his siblings were listed. *** * * * History after Faustino's death 1920 Cloverdale census documents Lena Jacks, age 26, wife to Benjamin Jacks, age 22. Ben, Native American, is working for the "steam railroad." They have two children; Melvin William Jacks, age 3 and Eleanor Jacks, age 18 months. 1930 Healdsburg census documents Lena Jacks, age 35 and Ben Jacks, age 33. Also in household are; Melvin Jacks, age 14, son Frances Eleanor Jacks, age 11, daughter Vera Jacks, age 7, daughter Marie Jacks, age 4, daughter Sidney "Sib" Alcantra, age 27, Lena's half-bro In August, 1930 Lena gave birth to another baby, who died 3 months later. Per death notice in paper. Lena gave birth to her last baby on May 19, 1932. Lena divorced Benjamin Jacks sometime between 1933 and 1940. Although Jacks died in 1961, Lena went back to using the surname Pedrotti and even enumerated that she was widowed. 1940 Healdsburg census documents Lena Pedrotti, age 46, head of household, widowed. Also in household are; Vera Beatrice Jacks, age 17, daughter Marie Victoria Jacks, age 14, daughter Eva May Jacks, age 7, daughter Joaquin C. Alcantra, age 26, half-brother * * * * Mention from Faustino's boyhood News from Olema** The little 4 year old son of A. Pedrotti had a limb broken by the falling off the gate, on Tuesday of last week. Dr. Deas was called and the little sufferer is now doing as well as could be expected.
