Read More	This letter was in the Free Press Standard, Carrollton, Ohio, Thursday, February 20, 1919. Curt wrote it to his neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Simmons, of Loudon Twp., Carroll County, Ohio, while he was in Padua, Italy, December 28, 1918, during World War I. Although having been in the hospital since November 12, I am feeling fine. I was taken with influenza, which I got headed off before it got much of a grip on me, but I never had anything knock me out quicker than it did. No doubt you are all celebrating since we stopped the Hun havoc. I will try to describe my trip over here. I left New York on June 8, on the Agantani, which carries 10, 000 passengers, arriving seven days later at Liverpool, and from there we went by rail to South Hampden, which is also known as Yorchester. Remaining there over night, we crossed the channel and arrived at Havre, France, where we spent a couple days. Then we went by rail to Cheaumont, where at that time, General Perishing had his headquarters. From there we went by truck to Essey-Les-Eaux, where we remained five days. We were in the reserve at the battle of Chauteau Thiery in July. It was in that battle that Howard Polen, who lived in Jefferson, was killed. We left July 28 for Italy, riding in a box car. It required two days to make the trip. We had hardly enough room to sit on our packs, and the journey, as you may know, was far from pleasant. We traveled over the Alps and passed through the worlds longest tunnel, nine miles in length. Along the Alp ranges the scenery is so beautiful that it cannot be described. There were wheat fields on the mountain sides. How they ever get it down I cannot imagine for there is no way but by hand or haul it down by pack mules. We landed at Villa France, Italy, and going about six miles out of the town we put up our squad tents. Then about a month before the big drive we came to Treviso, just back of the front line. We were in two airplane raids, then in the big drive. While on the Austrian border I took sick. My company is down at Fiunne, Austria, on the Adriatic Sea, and I will join them in a week or so. Considering that I was so far from home, I had a real nice Christmas dinner, but I hope the next one will be eaten with my dear parents. Give my regards to all. Corp. Robert C. Roof, Co. Robert Curtis Roof, 77, of 1045 Salineville Rd., Carrollton, died Tuesday morning in Aultman Hospital from complications following surgery. Born April 6, 1896 in Loudon Township, a son of the late Elmer and Mary (Stenger) Roof, he was a life resident of Carroll County, moving from Loudon Twp., to the Carrollton address in 1972. A retired farmer, he was a member of Kilgore United Methodist Church, an army veteran of World War I and a member of Jewett V. F. W. Survivors include four sons, Robert of Hayworth, Illinois, Jesse of 4204 Salineville Rd., Carrollton, Glenn and Ronald of the home; four daughters Mrs. Louis (Joan) Erwin of Burbank, Ohio, Mrs. Thomas (Elizabeth) West of Bowerston, Mrs. Joseph (Linda) Correll of Carrollton, and Mrs. Charles (Dorothy) Leishman of Salineville; two brothers, Perry and Zed Roof, both of Kilgore; a sister, Mrs. Helen Lawrence of West Lafayette, and 24 grandchildren. His wife, Faye, preceded him in death June 29, 1972. Two brothers are also deceased. Services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Sweeney Funeral Home at Carrollton with Rev. Floyd Hazen officiating. Burial will be in Kilgore Cemetery. Calling hours were scheduled at the funeral home Wednesday.
