Sarah was the oldest of 15 children born to Richard Stephens six of which were born to Sarah's mother Eleanor Addis. Sarah's mother Eleanor died on October 3, 1833 due to cholera in Warren County, Ohio. Sarah's father remarried to Nancy Mount and they moved their family to Knox County, Illinois. Sarah and her husband Timothy Shay were married March 3, 1834 in Warren County, Ohio and soon moved to Knox County, Illinois where they farmed near Timothy's brother Julius Shay who was married to Sarah's sister Elizabeth Armanda Stephens. After Timothy died Sarah moved to live in Iowa. In trying to pin down where Sarah was born I came across conflicting information. It is my understanding she was born near Hackettstown, New Jersey which is in Warren County. However she may have actually been born near Hackettstown in Morris County. Sarah Stephens Shay was the sister of Lorenzo Dow Stephens, famed Death Valley pioneer and survivor of that ill fated wagon train that crossed the Mojave Desert in the winter of 1849/50. Lorenzo wrote one of the only two accounts of the events of that trip in a book titled "Life Sketches of a Jayhawker of '49". OBITUARY compliments of: Stender-Custer (#47288119) Adams County Free Press April 5, 1894 Obituary The death of Mrs. J. T. Young's mother, which was recently recorded in our columns was occasioned by a severe burn. She went out to get a shovel full of coals from the fire, where her two sons were butchering, to make a fire in the kitchen stove, preparatory to getting dinner. Accidentally her clothing took fire, and before she was aware of it she was covered with flames. The two sons did all they could to put out the fire, but all in vain. Their hands were badly burned in their effort to save their mother, and one of them, Ellsworth Shay, is still unable to help himself. The funeral of Mrs. Shay occurred at the M. E. church in Strahan at 11 o'clock a.m., Thursday March 15, Rev. C. W. Brewer, of Malvern, officiating. A large congregation of friends and neighbors were present to mourn her departure. She was a model woman, kind to all that came under her roof, and loved by all who knew her. When she found that she must die she talked to those present and spent the remaining time in prayer and repeating scripture texts, also the hymn "Jesus lover of my soul." She had been from girlhood, a member of the Methodist Protestant church and was always a happy, consistent Christian. She said she was prepared to die, and ready to go. Mrs. Sarah Shay was born in Warren county, New Jersey, March 20, 1816. She moved to Ohio early in life; was married to Timothy Shay in 1834. He died March 5, 1863. They moved to Knox county, Illinois in 1839; from there to Union county, Iowa in 1868 and in 1882 to Mills county, where she remained until her death. She was the mother of 15 children, of whom twelve are still living. She has thirty-nine grandchildren living and fifteen great grandchildren. Those present at the funeral were: Moses Shay and wife, of Coin; Solomon Smith, and wife, of Thayer; J. T. Young, wife and daughter, of Corning; David Shay, of Wayne, Nebraska, Melvin Shay, of Elgin, Nebraska, also Wesley Stephens, of Galesburg, Illinois, a brother of the deceased.
