Thomas Scott Slates, 55, of Zanesville was pronounced dead at the scene of the two-vehicle accident which reportedly occurred between Zanesville and Cambridge. According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, Slates was eastbound at 9:25 a.m. in the passing lane and slid into the rear of an eastbound dump truck driven by James M. Hesson, 29, of Cumberland, Ohio, which the patrol said was traveling at a slow rate of speed in the passing lane. Hesson reportedly was not injured and the accident was still under investigation at press time this Wednesday. A native of Kilgore, Slates was born January 8, 1936, a son of the late Thomas C. and Myrtle (Harmon) Slates. He was a 1953 graduate of Carrollton High School, where he was a standout on the Warrior football squad as an offensive and defensive lineman and center. Slates also played Warrior basketball and was described by a former teammate as a good catcher for Carrollton's baseball team. He was also an avid golfer. Upon graduation from CHS, Slates obtained employment with Hanna Coal Co. and later accepted a job with the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District as maintenance engineer at the Atwood Lake Lodge, which was opened in 1965. He was named assistant manager at the Lodge in 1966 and later became the Lodge's manager in July 1969, a position he held until 1973 when he accepted employment in the sales and service department at Salt Fork Lodge near Cambridge. At the time of his death, Slates was in charge of sales and services for the Canteen Corp., a division of Transworld Service, Inc., the vendor for Ohio State park lodges. He was a member of Kilgore United Methodist Church, Amrou Grotto in Zanesville, Masonic Lodge of Scio, Tadmor Shrine of Akron and Scottish Rite Valley of Steubenville. He was married June 23, 1973 to the former Pauline Yanice, who survives and lives in Zanesville. He also has a daughter, Mrs. Tyrone (Robin) Quinn of Columbus; two sons, Steve of Lexington, Kentucky, and David, a senior at Brown University in Providence, R. I.; a sister, Mrs. Carl (Jean) Johnson of Carrollton and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. this Thursday at the Allmon-Dugger Funeral Home in Carrollton with Rev. Randy Cetorelli officiating. Calling hours were observed this Wednesday afternoon and evening with Masonic services at 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in Kilgore Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
