He was seeking for something, but he wasn't sure what. He was a carpenter, so he was always able to find work. He finally found one thing he wanted and married her. The next thing came a little later when he met some Mormon missionaries. He and Aurelia believed what they said and moved their family across the border from Canada and settled in Missouri. They were soon chased out and ended up in Nauvoo, Illinois. He and his sons helped build the Nauvoo Temple and cared for the farm of Joseph Smith Jr. When they had to leave Nauvoo, Thomas and his sons used their teams to help get some of the saints out of the city. They were living in Salem in 1856-57, helping people by contributing potatoes, flour, beets, etc. to them. In 1859 , they joined a wagon train heading to California.
