Again has the angel of death visited the green earth and the idol of a home has been called away in the bloom of youthful womanhood. A mother is oppressed with grief, a father weeps for one lost in life's sweet bloom, and brother's are left lonely to mourn a sister's death. The death of Verna B. Simmons, 22 years of age, occurred in Protestant Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, on January 13th, where she had gone to undergo a surgical operation that her physician advised necessary for the relief of stomach trouble, from which she had been suffering for several years. The operation proved a success, and after it had been performed she repeatedly wrote her family of her rapid improvement; but when almost ready to return to her loved ones at home, she experienced a relapse and died after her father had been at her beside only a few minutes. Her remains were brought back to Kilgore, and, followed by a large concourse of mourning friends, were interred in Union Cemetery. Early in life the deceased became a member of the Methodist Church, and her's was a life that feared no sudden ending. Her friends were numbered by her acquaintances, all of whom regarded her with universal esteem as a bright and religious young women. In her death the Sabbath school loses a diligent and faithful scholar, the parents a loving daughter, and the brothers a loving daughter, and the brothers an affectionate sister, who was cut off at the threshold of a useful life. Beyond the setting is the rising sun and the coming day; beyond the darkness is the light; beyond the storm the calm. A loved one has passed from this world of sorrow and affliction to a brighter, better, and more beautiful world beyond where the beautiful beings that here pass before us like shadows will stay in our vision forever.
