Dooley, a well known Lake Erie & Western engineer and a most excellent citizen. Dooley, a well known Lake Erie & Western engineer and a most excellent citizen. Almost six years ago Mr. Dooley received injuries while running on a locomotive, and later was seized with paralysis which was responsible for his death. The deceased was born in Tullimore Kings County, Ireland in the year 1840, being at the age of seventy-eight. His parents were Patrick and Catherine (Poland) Dooley, both of them dying when he was only a mere lad. He had three sisters; Marie, Kathryn, Delia and one brother, Martin, who preceded him to the grave several years ago. The elder brother, Martin, was the first to leave his native land and settle in America. A few years later he sent for his brother William, who was then at the age of eight, arriving at Burlington, Vermont, at which place he entered a convent school and received a fair education. When he reached the age of eighteen he was ambitious to take up railroad work and was given a position as fireman on an engine with the Central Vermont railroad. From the start he made good and five years later was promoted to freight engineer. A few years later, Mr. Dooley left the Central Vermont Railroad company going west and accepted a position in the same capacity with the Union Pacific road and was in their service for a long period, after which he began work for the C.B. & Q. When leaving that company he came to Lafayette in the year 1889 and took charge of a locomotive for the Lake Erie & Western railroad and remained in their service for a period of twenty-three years in the capacity of freight and passenger. Not only was "Dad", as he was familiarly called, beloved by all of his brother railroad men, but he was held in the highest esteem by the traveling public and the citizens of Tipton.. He was a member of good standing in the Locomotive brotherhood. In the year 1871, Mr. Dooley was united in marriage to Miss Alice McNeil, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. After the ceremony they located at Creston, Iowa, remaining there for some time. Their next move was to Lafayette. This most excellent couple were the parents of six children, two boys and four daughters. One of the sons died in infancy and the other succumbed at the age of ten. The daughters who survive beside the mother, are Mrs. Toney Murphy, residing southwest of the city; Mrs. Theodore Hertle, north of here; Mrs. Harry Smith and Mrs Dr. Thomas Kigin, of this city. There are nine grandchildren living. The funeral services will be held at the St. John's Catholic church, at which e was a member, Saturday morning at 9:00 o'clock, Father Billstein, officiating. Burial will be at the Catholic cemetery.
