Drake died suddenly Sunday morning at 10 o'clock and his body was buried in Harlem cemetery Tuesday. He had been in failing health for a year but his last illness lasted only a few hours. Mr. Drake was a representative of one of the oldest families in the county. He was born in that township July 6, 1841, hence was in his 71st year. His grandfather, Cheseman Drake, came to Ohio from New York at an early day, dying soon after his arrival. Simeon Drake, father of William, was born in East Springfield, but in 1847 he moved to Carroll County. There were seven members of the family, William being third. When the Civil War broke out William Drake was among the first to enlist, volunteering in Co. D. 80th O. V. I., participating in all the battles in which his regiment was engaged, including Mission Ridge, Iuka, Corinth, Jackson, Champion Hill, and the sieges of Corinth, Vicksburg and Resecca. Through the explosion of a cannon he lost his hearing in the right ear, the left being also affected. The regiment was mustered out of service at Little Rock, Arkansas, August 13, 1865, and Mr. Drake reached home on the 27th resuming the works of peace as taught by his father. August 20, 1868, he was united in marriage with Nancy A. Jackman and settled on the farm on which he passed the remainder of his life. They have six children, as follows: Sarah J. Ray, Jessie E. Boop, William D., Thomas B., Howard I., and Clermont C. All the family are members of the Methodist Church, of which Mr. Drake had been a class leader for many years, also trustee and treasurer. He was a democrat but often voted the prohibition ticket. He filled several township offices and was the nominee of the democratic party for sheriff in 1871 against James A. George, and in 1888 he was nominated for the same office by the prohibitionists. He was exclusively a farmer and a highly moral man.
