He emigrated with his parents to Iowa, and from there to Missouri, where he took a special course in the Commercial College of Savanah. He became an expert penman and taught in the Spencerian system for several years. He came to Glasco in 1887, and entered the employ of Isaac Biggs, remaining there a little over a year, when he succeeded Mr. Biggs as postmaster of Glasco, in which capacity he served seven years. While serving as postmaster he and his brother George established a small business under the firm name of A. Ott & Brother Grocers, and to meet the local demand they later added a small stock of jewelry. After his term as postmaster expired, they branched out a little in their business and made their store general merchandise, and conducted this establishment until 1900, when they sold to Mr. Stahley. Mr. Ott shortly after opened up a general store in the La Rocque building and was very successful as his absolute honesty and courteous treatment of his customers made him many friends. In 1906 Mr. Ott was elected Register of Deeds of this county and he sold his business to Padgett & Schmersey. He served eight years as Register and by his strict attention to the duties of this office and his kindly consideration of those having business there, he made many new friends. In the spring of 1915 he went to Sterling, Colorado, where he lived until his death, June 20, 1920. The body of Mr. Ott was brought back to Glasco Friday, and funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Flora Soule, his sister, and he was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery here, by the side of his wife, Lucy Hyvola Dalrymple, who died January 31, 1912, and his small daughter, Elma Estelle, who died in infancy. Mr. Ott leaves to mourn his loss five children: Mrs. H.A. Hart of Sterling, Colorado; Mrs. W.K. Carlgren of Concordia; Mrs. R.H. James of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Homer M. Ott of Arkansas City; and Roy H. Ott of New York City; five grandchildren, seven brothers and two sisters. George W.
