Blanchard and recently at the Mrs. Katherine Weaver homes died Sunday afternoon at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll. He was taken there two weeks ago. Curtis was a Canadian citizen for nearly a quarter of a century. He was a pioneer of the Saskatchewan wheat country. He and his cousin, Dennis, shipped two carloads of machinery and horses to Lang, Sask. in March 1905, where they had bought land. The two young Iowans unloaded their capital goods on the raw prairie where they pitched a tent on Dennis' land and begin to build a barn in which they were to live until a small house was built for them to begin "batching." Curtis later built several buildings on his land a mile east of his cousin's. He prospered especially during the War years of 1914-1918 when the wheat market was high. In the years that followed, he added several hundred acres to his Canadian holdings and had most of it at the time of his death. Others from the Coon Rapids Community followed Curtis and his cousin to Saskatchewan. Among them was Amos Wilson, O. J. Gehrig and the late George Grimm. Curtis never married. He lived on his original purchase until the late thirties when he moved into Lang, the nearest town and rented his land. He visited relatives here every year or two but on his last visit four years ago he became ill, an illness from which he never recovered and was never sufficiently able to return to Canada. He took out his Canadian citizenship papers in the early '20s when it was thought that additional voting power my open the way for no tariff, or reduced tariff, on wheat shipped into the United States. Hundreds of former citizens of this country became Canadian citizens at that time. Curtis L. Bowman, son of Henry and Nancy Bowman, was born January 13, 1879, and died at Carroll, October 21, 1951, at the age of 72 years, 9 months and 8 days. Curtis was born at Muscatine. At the age of two years he moved with his parents to Greene County where he grew to manhood. He was baptized in the Star Church which his father helped build after he moved to the Star Community. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. A. W. Blanchard, Edna, and Mrs. M. H. Galloway, Josephine, and five brothers, namely Francis, Lincoln, Roscoe all of Coon Rapids, Eugene of Letcher, South Dakota and Henry C. of Kennebeck, South Dakota. His parents and one brother, Hiram, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at the Coder-Anderson Funeral Home Wednesday at 1:30 o'clock. Pallbearers were Roy Graves, John Miller, Floyd Kretzinger, Bernice McLaughlin, Clarence Kennedy and Arthur Dupratt, Milo Dailey Jr. sang two numbers, accompanied by Roy Holliday. The Rev. J. B. Pooley of the Methodist Church gave the sermon. Burial was in the Coon Rapids
