His sister, Mrs. Melvin Galloway and two brothers, Lincoln and Roscoe started for Jefferson but on account of the snow blocked roads, their brother Francis had died before they arrived. The body was returned to the Coder Anderson Funeral Home that evening. Francis Ira Bowman was born on a farm in Willow Township, Greene County, Iowa, September 15th, 1887, to Henry and Nancy Bowman. He attended the country school in Willow township, the Star Church, and in his early life, helped his father on the parental farm where he grew to manhood. In the spring of 1908, with his brother Eugene and the neighbor, Hal Doran, Francis went to western South Dakota to homestead some land. Tama was there post office but Faith was the nearest railroad station, 35 miles distant. After proving up the claims in that territory, the two brothers came back to the eastern part of South Dakota, while Doran stayed at Tama and later became its postmaster. Francis and Eugene began farming about 8 miles east of Letcher. Francis in those days was a happy character and received much enjoyment out of singing and playing his violin. The two brothers farmed in the neighborhood of Fletcher until 1941 when they dissolved that partnership and Francis returned to Coon Rapids. He lived here until two years ago when he purchased a home in Bayard and moved there. He never married. Francis had suffered with a heart ailment for several years. In recent years, he had spent some time in the hospital at Jefferson. About two weeks ago, he re-entered the Greene County hospital where he died at 3 o'clock in the afternoon of Thursday, November 27th, the age of 65 years, 2 months and 12 days. The deceased leaves four brothers, Henry, Eugene, Lincoln and Roscoe: two sisters, Mrs. A. W. (Edna) Blanchard and Mrs. Melvin (Josie) Galloway. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Nancy Bowman and by two brothers, Curtis and Hiram. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Coder Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. J. B. Pooley in charge of the service. Pallbearers were H. H. Scott, Art Luxford, Orlo Whitten, Arnold Bower, John Walsh and Leo Watrous. Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were Eugene Bowman and Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Bowman all of Letcher, South Dakota; Byron Jamison of Des Moines and Mr. and Mrs. Don Warneke and family of Nevada.
