"Edward Porter came to Cass county in September, 1855, and settled in Round Grove Township, now a part of Edna township, and located on the farm owned by William S. Townsend, who was one of the first settlers in Cass county. Edward lived in a small log cabin until 1870, when he built a nice frame house, in which he now resides. Mr. Porter was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, on the 1st of February, 1813. When about ten years of age he moved with his father to Richland county, Ohio, and there remained until about twenty years of age. IN THE FALL OF 1833, HE MOVED TO MACON COUNTY, ILLINOIS, WHERE HIS FATHER [DANIEL PORTER], DIED, LEAVING EDWARD TO SUPPORT THE FAMILY. Edward remained in that county until 1835, when he removed to Stark county, Illinois, and there remained a short time, when he came to Iowa, and has since made this his home. Mr. Porter was married in Stark county, [CORRECTION: Putnam County], Illinois, on the 25th of October, 1838, to Clarissa Powell, a native of New York state. They have had thirteen children, eight of whom are now living: Elizabeth, Jane, Amelia, Isaiah, Alice, John, Rosa and William. Daniel W., the eldest son, enlisted in 1862, in the Twenty-third Iowa Infantry, and died in the service. Mr. Porter's mother died in 1883, in Stark county, Illinois, at the age of ninety-six years.... . The first marriage in Edna was that of John Dyer and Mary E. Porter, daughter of Edward and Clarissa (Powell) Porter, at the home of the bride's parents. Judge Dickerson performed the ceremony. These parties are both dead." . [End] . Edward Porter and other family members migrated from Macon County to Stark County, Illinois approximately a year or two after Daniel Porter's death. Edward Porter (1813-1892) and his wife, Clarissa Powell Porter (1819-1872) and their children migrated from Illinois to Cass County, Iowa, in about 1856. They were amongst the early settlers of Edna Township. . EDWARD PORTER DONATED A HILLSIDE OF HIS FARM (WHICH HE HAD PURCHASED FROM Wm. TOWNSEND), FOR A COMMUNITY BURIAL GROUND. In days-gone-by, this early cemetery / burial ground was known as the "Porter Cemetery," or the "Edna" cemetery. It is now named the "Reno Methodist Cemetery." Edward & Clarissa Porter and many of their descendants are buried in this small cemetery. Indeed, Porter/Powell descendants continue to be laid-to-rest in this rural Cass County, Iowa, cemetery -- even today. . [End]. . Died at his home in Edna Grove, Cass County on the 16th of April, Edward Porter, aged 79 years 2 months and 15 days. The deceased was born in Pennsylvania, February 1, 1813, and when very young was taken by his parents to Ohio. From there he moved to Stark county, IL. He came to this county in 1855 and settled in Edna Grove. He was one of the early settlers and endured all the hardships of a pioneer life. He was married in 1839 to Clarissa Powell, who preceded him to the better land June 6, 1872. Of thirteen children born to them there are six surviving, all of whom with a large number of grandchildren were present at the funeral. . Father Porter professed religion August 7, 1859, under the labors of Rev. J. J. Hillman, of the new light Christian church. He was one of the charter members of the society formed by this denomination at Reno. In 1872 he united with the M. E. church of which he was a member until his death. . His life was endowed with all the christian grace of benevolence. No religious or charitable cause ever appealed to him in vain. His home was always open to receive ministers of the gospel, and his chief desire in life was to imitate the example of Him who commanded us to love one another. . His was buried in the Reno Cemetery April 17th. The funeral services were held in the Reno M E church conducted by the writer. An immense throng gathered to pay their last respects to the memory of the one who had been their neighbor so many years. May all who followed him to the grave be as well prepared for death. R. E. EDWARD PORTER Memorial stone: Correct Location: *RENO METHODIST CEMETERY, Edna Township, Cass County, IOWA.* Many years ago, this small rural cemetery was located near the former townsite of RENO, IOWA. RENO METHODIST CEMETERY: The land for this rural burial-ground was donated by Edward Porter, an early pioneer who settled in Edna Township in about 1856. Therefore, in days-gone-by, this pioneer cemetery was also known as "The Porter Cemetery." (Memorial Day, 2014). Read less

Memoir of A.J. Finley, Illinois 1939: "We reached Edward Porter's where Sylvester Bamber now lives. Mr. Porter was a cousin of my mother and lived in the only frame dwelling house in this settlement at that time. I think the house was 16 X 18 feet, one story high. He and his wife and brother occupied the house and when we arrived they were increased by my father and mother and six children, my grandfather, Catherine Porter - a sister of the Porter boys. *, and a young man who came with us, making fourteen in all."
