Description	:	Elwood Martin, 83, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at his home in Piney River. Born in Arrington (Phoenix) on Jan. 14, 1923, he was a son of the late Walter B. Martin and Viola (Gertrude) Ballowe Martin. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Bernice Mae Powell Martin on Sept. 28, 2003. Born in Arrington (Phoenix) on Jan. 14, 1923, he was a son of the late Walter B. Martin and Viola (Gertrude) Ballowe Martin. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Bernice Mae Powell Martin on Sept. 28, 2003. He worked as a superintendent and assistant director of Buildings & Grounds at the Lynchburg Central Virginia Training Center, where he actively participated in their Special Olympics program and retired with more than 20 years of service. He also had worked at American Cyanamid for 25 years. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and served with the 13th Air Supply Squadron in Japan, and was a member of VFW Post 7701 of Colleen. He was an active member of Rose Union Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years and served as a deacon. He is survived by two daughters, S. Joan Martin Linnander and her husband, Bob, of Nazareth, Pa., and Melinda Lee Martin Dunn and her husband, Bob, of Williamsburg; three brothers, Denton Martin of Piney River, Reeves B. Martin of Madison Heights, and Vernon Martin of Lynchburg; two sisters, Gladys Blanks and Alberta Clisham, both of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Erika Lee Linnander, who is a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University, and Robert Martin Linnander, who is a hospital finance consultant in Washington, D.C.; and his loyal companion and family pet, Prince. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters. A service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2006, at Rose Union Baptist Church by the Rev. John Gordon. Burial with military honors by VFW Post 7701 will follow in Jonesboro Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Piney River Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 28, Piney River, VA 22964; Roseland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 39, Roseland, VA 22967; Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
