Welty, daughter of Elmer and Mary Bell Hays Guthrie, was born in Hartford, Ia., April 8, 1887, and died at Iowa Lutheran Hospital Sept. 29, 1968. She spent her childhood days near Hartford, moving to Norwalk, Ia., when she was 10 years old. It was at Norwalk she received her education and prepared herself for the teaching profession. She began her teaching career in the rural schools and after having taught there two years she joined the staff of Norwalk Consolidated School where she taught for 27½ years in the Primary Department. After retiring she served as a substitute teacher for several years. She also served as a Sunday school teacher for many years in the Norwalk, Christian Church of which she was a lifetime member. She was married in 1911 to Bert Welty of Norwalk, where they established their home. Mr. Welty and his father-in-law, Mr. Guthrie, were the organizers of the First Savings Bank which later consolidated with the Norwalk Bank. After her father’s death in 1925, Eula’s mother lived with her and her husband until his death in 1943. Eula continued to care for her mother until she died in 1958. Mrs. Welty was a charter member of the Goodwill Chapter number 537 of Eastern Star, a former officer of Past Matron’s Club, a member and former president of the Norwalk Woman’s Club, former president of Norwalk Parent-Teacher Association, having been honored in 1960 by the Iowa Congress of Parents and Teachers with a Distinguished Service Member Scroll. She loved children, and her interest in them continued on through school and into their professions in life. Her nearest survivors are cousins. # # # Indianola Record-Herald Indianola, IA Service for Retired Norwalk School Teacher Funeral services for Mrs. Eulalie G. Welty, 81, retired Norwalk school teacher, were held Wednesday at the Galloway-McLaren Funeral home in Norwalk. Mrs. Welty died Sunday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines, after an illness of only a few days. Born at Hartford, she had lived most of her life at Norwalk where she had been a school teacher 27 years, She was a member of Eastern Star, Past Matrons Club, Norwalk Woman’s Club, Norwalk Parent-Teacher Association and the Church of Christ.
