Two sons Art and Walter preceded their father in death. There remains also 24 grandchildren and 1 brother Art, and 2 sisters Mrs Tina Emmerson and Mrs G Krull. He was married to Tillie Hulsebus on March 6 1895, thus, sharing almost 50 years of married life of joys as well as hardships. His companion took tender care of him to his very end, throughout the weeks of his suffering. When 14 years old the family left Germany, following his older brother George to America. They first located at Applington, Iowa. From there they came to the vicinity of Defiance. He came under the powerful preaching of a young reformed preacher with the name of Johnson. God moved mightily upon his youthful heart. Never did that faithful preaching of that man of God leave him until he gave his heart to God at Applington. He was faithful to the church and when they moved to Defiance they joined the Evangelical church there. He filled various positions of honor and trust in the church and served for a number of years as a trustee. Pallbearers were Harold Benge and Lee, Harry, Neal, Wes and Howard Ahrenholtz. From "1882~1982 Defiance (Iowa) Century Review" Henry Ahrenholtz is a German emigrant, who homesteaded in the Defiance vicinity. Having three brothers, Ben H., Arthur, and George, and one sister, Tina, the second son of Henry and Marie Ahrenholtz was born in 1870 and died in 1943. In 1895 Henry married Matilda, daughter of Peter and Helena (Weber) Hulsebus. Tillie was born May 21, 1877 in Warrensburg, Illinois but in 1884, at the age of seven, moved with her parents to a farm about four miles south of Defiance, which was purchased and recorded in Shelby County in 1882. She was the second daughter and had four sisters, Hannah, Kate, Amanda, and Lydia and three brothers, Peter, Alfred, and Rudie. It is interesting to note the important part religion played throughout Matilda's life. Rev. Buente, a German Evangelical Minister, organized a class in religion which met in her parents' home, shortly after the family's arrival. These first services were all in German, were later conducted in school houses, and finally moved to the Defiance Methodist Episcopal Church around 1917, making the transition to the English language. Henry and Matilda were the parents of: Peter, 1896 (Sally Jedele); Louis, 1900 (Irene Quathamer); Edwin, 1902 (Ethel Smith); Arthur, 1908 (Myrtle Cox); Chester, 1909 (Margaret Moore); Walter, 1911; and Grace, 1913 (Harold Benge). Both Grace Benge and Edwin reside at Manilla.
