The search for the brutal murderer of John D. George, 39, and his wife, Virginia, 37, of Lee Township continues today and, as this paper goes to press, no trace has been found of their missing automobile. The couple was fatally shot in their home at 6:30 a.m., last Friday. Mrs. Geoge, who was conscious until shortly before her death at 8:10 a.m., was able to give somewhat meager details as to what transpired at the time of the murder of her husband. She stated her husband left their first floor bedroom at 6:30 and stepped into the living room adjoining it. She heard him say, "What are you doing in here?" which was followed by a shotgun blast. She rushed to the doorway, saw the murderer and fled back into her bedroom. The murderer stepped into the doorway and fired a second shot which struck Mrs. George in the abdomen. He then walked over and kicked her as she lay on the floor. She dragged herself across the bed room floor, through the living room to the telephone where she rang the Harlem Springs operator, telling her to get the sheriff and the doctor. Sheriff Roy Orwick arrived on the scene a few minutes later followed by Dr. Charles Dowell and the Sweeney ambulance. Mrs. George was rushed to the hospital in Canton but died as the ambulance was on Sponseller Hill near Waco. Her only description of the murderer was that he wore a cap. She told Arthur Tindall, a neighbor who accompanied her in the ambulance, that she did not know the man. Shortly after he arrived on the scene, Sheriff Roy Orwick notified the State Highway Patrol which was alerted to pick up a 1936 Dodge bearing the license number S-163-E. Homer Wilson, who lives a mile and a half this side of the George farm later stated that he saw Mr. George's car go by only a few minutes before the sheriff's car went in the other direction. Coroner Clarence Deckman, assisted by Prosecutor Glenn Fortune, performed an autopsy and returned a verdict of murder. Prosecutor Fortune has discounted robbery as a motive and has indicated that a grudge may have been the motive. Sheriff Orwick and Prosecutor Fortune stated yesterday that they have a number of clues as to the killer's identity but will be unable to get much action on them until the car is found. On Tuesday, Howard Grunder of Malvern volunteered the services of his airplane to search the county for the missing automobile. Accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Bob Hawk, he flew low over Carroll and bordering counties for more than three hours by was unable to locate it. Upon completion of the flight. Deputy Hawk stated that he believed definitely that the car is not in this neighborhood. He said that they covered this territory thoroughly and that the view from the low flying plane was very good. Following Sheriff Orwick's report of the case a concentrated search for the missing car was made in this vicinity with as high as eighteen state highway patrol cars in the county at one time. In the search two escapees were picked up, one of which was returned to Mansfield and one to Massillon State Hospital. The search was extended to cover all of the state of Ohio and neighboring States with all officers alerted to watch for the missing car. Mr. George was an installation man four the local telephone company and was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Carrollton. his survivors include his mother, Mrs. Bess Stewart of Union Township and Mt. Vernon, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Elsie Gallaher of Union Township and several nieces and nephews. A brother James, preceded him in death in 1935. Mrs. George is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William W. Saunders of Canton; six sisters, Mrs. Mary Stertzbach of Lee Twp., Mrs. Gladys Roberts of Perry Twp., Mrs. Vivian Dews of Canton, Mrs. Loretta Bennett of Canton, and Mrs. Etta Boothe of Canton and Mrs. Catherine Henery of Massillon; five brothers. Eugene and Sterling Saunders of Canton. Arthur of Waynesburg, Richard of Lee Twp., and Ford Saunders of Pocotella, Idaho; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Albina Casto of Morgantown, West Virginia, and numerous nieces and nephews. Double rites were held Sunday afternoon in the Harlem Springs Methodist Church with the Sweeney Funeral Home in charge. Rev. Bernard T. Lomas officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. The Carroll County Commissioners Monday offered a $500 reward for the arrest and conviction of Ernest Deem as the murder of John D. and Virginia George, last June 3. The alleged killer has been the subject of an intensive search over three states since that date. Mr. and Mrs. George were slain during the early morning of June 3, 1949 at their farm home in Lee Township by a heretofore unidentified intruder. Both died as a result of shotgun blasts in the abdomen. Mrs. George was able to drag herself to the telephone to report the crime to Sheriff Roy Orwick, who summoned aid. She died an hour and a half later enroute to a hospital. The killer made his getaway in their car which was later found near Moundsville, West Virginia by hunters. Ernest deem, a cousin of Mrs. George, is believed to have borne a grudge against her. He is 42 years of age 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighs 140 to 160 pounds and had brown hair and blue eyes. His last known address was Belona, Virginia. He left Virginia late in May telling his mother and sister that if he didn't arrive in Richmond within two weeks, he wouldn't be home until fall.
