Elizabeth Ruse was a large women about 6 feet tall and weighing 300 pounds. John died September 22,1859 (Loudon Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio) near Kilgore, Ohio. John and Elizabeth were married on Oct 1,1811 and came to Ohio with the tide of emigration about the year 1811. John's father, Fredrick Adam Slates, entered the farm from the Government Aug 10,1813 and transferred it to John May 1,1820. John was by trade a shoemaker at which he worked for a living until he succeeded in getting a small patch of land cleared on which to grow corn. Elizabeth was an expert at the spinning wheel and would go from house to house in the neighborhood to spin while her husband stayed at home and cared for the children. They also raised two of Adam Slates children (Solomon and Elizabeth) after Adams Slates death in 1831. Both are buried in the Lutheran Cemetery, Kilgore, Ohio. Seven children. 1784, Baptism recorded October 12,1784 - Lutheran church in Lovettsville, Loudon County, Virginia May 1,1820. Frederick Slates and wife Margaret Slates of Loudoun Co., Virginia, for a consideration of $558.00 deed to John Slates of the County of Jefferson, State of Ohio, the South East Quarter, Section 34, Twp. 11, Range 4. The same was Granted by the President of the USA August 11,1813, to Frederick Slates, assignee of James Chambers. Rec. Book 59, page 31. July 6,1833 Arnold Barker Sr., Joseph Barker and Daniel Rutan, trustees of the Union Meeting House in Rook Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio. for and in consideration of the sum of $62.50, granted, bargained,. sold and quit claimed 1 acre 16 perches (rods) on which there is a meeting house, to John Slates, John Hicks, Isaac Hibbs, Solomon Albaugh and Peter Notestine, trustees of the German Reformed and Lutheran Churches and their successors in office. It, being part of the North East Quarter of Section 12, Township 12, Range 5. Rec. Book l page 201. In the 1850 census John was still living in Loudon Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio. John was listed as a farmer age 66 born in Virginia, his wife Elizabeth age 70 born in Virginia.
