Description	:	John went to common school. He married on June 27, 1844 to Nancy Stenger daughter of George Stenger. Nancy died May 5, 1853. She is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Kilgore, Ohio. On April 20,1854 John married Abigail Harner, daughter of Catharine Harner. She died March 7, 1860. On Sept. 12, 1865 John married Mrs. Eliza Jane Walters, a widow with one son. John spent his entire life wile active on his farm in Loudon Twp.,(owned in 1947 by Perry Roof.) Many things happened during John's tenure on this farm. The first barn was struck by lightening and burned. The next two were blown down by windstorms. The fourth barn now stands on the original sight as the first log barn. He died in the home of his son James, in Jewett, Ohio. He and his last two wives (Abigail and Eliza) are buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Jewett, Ohio. In his declining years he and his last wife lived with his son James. They were members of the Lutheran Church. John had a total of Thirteen children and one stepson. John Slates, a native of Carroll County, died Monday afternoon at his home in Jewett after a prolonged illness from paralysis. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Kilgore, Rev. MrOaok the Lutheran minister at Jewett, officiating. Mr. Slates was in his eighty-fourth year. He had been an invalid for several years, the fracture of a bone in his leg having rendered him helpless. He is survived by children, as follows; Harvey Slates and Mrs. William Arbaugh of Carrollton, Sanuel Slates of Bergholz, Nancy Myers of New Rumley, James Slates and Mrs. David Hosterman of Jewett, Charles Slates of Massillon, Howard Slates of Dennison and Mrs. William Miller of Kilgore. Frederick Slates of Jewett was a brother of the deceased. The deceased had been three time married, his third wife, whose maiden name was Eliza Dewell, survives. John's obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, June 30, 1905. John Slates of Jewett, an old Carroll County pioneer, born in Loudon Township in March, 1822, died Monday afternoon of paralysis. He had been ill four years, the beginning of which sickness was by reason of an accident. He had been a lifelong farmer until incapacitated by age. His third wife survives him together with thirteen children: Mrs. William Arbaugh, Mrs. Alonzo Myers, Mrs. William Miller, Mrs. D. Hosterman, and Messrs, Harvey, Samuel, James, Charles and Howard. The remains were interred Wednesday afternoon at Kilgore, the service being conducted by Rev. Rohlfing. Deceased was a very kind-hearted old man, always enlisted in the service of helping others.
