His obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, October 18, 1898. Hundreds of friends and acquaintances felt a pang of sorrow in the sudden death of John T. Cogsil of Loudon Township. He was widely known and universally respected. He had felt ill for the past few months but being of an uncomplaining nature he communicated the information to but few of his friends, and went around as usual until Tuesday when he reeled and fell by reason of his weakness. He was closely attended up until Saturday morning at 2 o'clock when all that was mortal of our friend and fellow citizen passed away. His death a shock to all many not hearing of his illness. It was especially so as to his two sisters, Misses Mary F. and Antoinette Cogsil, with whom he lived. Mr. Cogsil was 25 days past his 69th year and was unmarried. He was born in Maryland, a son of Harvey and Mary (Vincel) Cogsil. His father was born in Roxbury, Connecticut, and his mother in Loudon County, Virginia. In 1838 the family removed to Loudon Township, Carroll County, Ohio, where they bought a farm of 400 acres, which Harvey Cogsil named "The Oaks." This farm descended to John T. Cogsil and his sisters, and they have added to its area. Deceased attended the common schools and obtained a good business education, and to it he added industry and contentment, and a generous and noble spirit. Although always a man of wealth he was always possessed of a humble spirit and walked humbly before God and man. Financially and morally he was one of the first men in the community, and one whose loss is keenly felt. He dealt largely in stock but the horse seemed to be first in his eye among animals. He sought no public preferment only when a young man he was chosen Capitan of Co. K, first regiment, state militia. Politically he was a life-long Democrat. He was not allied to any church but all churches found in him a well-wisher and contributor. His father had been a member of the Episcopal Church and upon removing to Carroll County they found no church of their choice, but contented themselves by living up to the golden rule. On Sunday the mortal remains were laid away and such a cortege followed them as had never been known in Kilgore. Many attended from Carrollton and points equally distant. Rev. Gailey conducted the service and preached a sermon. The editor of the Chronicle is constrained to say he feels a personal loss in the death of so good a friend. We have known him for nearly 30 years and can give testimony to his sense of justice and right. The mortal remains of such men pass from our sight but their influence lives forever and shines like the stars. Information researched by Richard Paul Culler of Carrollton, Ohio.
