John has been so long identified with all Brown County's interests, moral and material, that a few words in his memory seem proper. John has been so long identified with all Brown County's interests, moral and material, that a few words in his memory seem proper. Mr. West has, for over 85 years, been a resident of what now constitutes Brown County. His father, [John West,] who was of English descent, and his mother, [Eleanor Laws Edwards,] who was a Scotch descent, were married in old Virginia, and lived in Fairfax County, on what afterward became a part of Bull Run battle field. They emigrated to Kentucky in 1788, and settled with other friends in a station [Kenton Station] at Washington, Mason County; there the subject of this sketch was born on the first day of January, 1797; when six months old his parents removed to Ohio and settled below Aberdeen on the river bank [of the Ohio River]. John began life in Ohio while it was a territory, under the governorship of Arthur St. Clair, the same year in which Adams County, of which Brown was a part, was organized. He was five years old when Ohio was made a state. When 11 years old his father died, leaving a widowed wife with several children to provide for, of whom he was the oldest son. The outlook was gloomy, but being a woman of good physical constitution, and determined mind, who had spent the eight years of the Revolution in bearing the cannon's boom in many of the battles, and having spent nine years with her infant family on the "dark and bloody grounds," [Eleanor Laws Edwards West] was equal to the emergency. She helped her 11-year-old boy [John] to carry the plow to the field and hitch the horses to it, and he began the struggle of life. He supplemented the proceeds of the few acres which they cultivated, by fishing in the Ohio and selling his fish at Maysville. Thus he grew up to manhood, of course, receiving but a limited education, but disposed to make the most of his opportunities. In 1817 John married Levinah Stewart, and the same year, being the year in which Brown County was organized, removed to Byrd Township, and began life in the woods. He built his cabin during the winter, and hired a man to help him and began his clearing in March. In one month the two had 10 acres of the heavily timbered land ready to roll, and the young wife, by the aid of a boy, had made 200 lbs. of maple sugar. The material prosperity of a pair who will make such a start, is assured. They reared a family of eight children [to adulthood], four sons and four daughters. [Their names are Susannah, Eleanor Ellen, James Walter, William Wallace, Joseph Stewart, Abigail, John McVey, and Caroline.] They gave them all the educational facilities within their reach, and accumulated a property of perhaps $20,000, and never handled a dollar but as the reward of hard toil. He lived in an age when physical strength and courage were at a premium, and established a reputation for both. He was always temperate and never quarrelsome, and all the trouble he ever had with anyone grew out of a love for, and determination to see, fair play. In politics he was always Democratic. He cast his first vote for James Monroe, his second for Andrew Jackson, and voted for the candidate of his party at teach succeeding election until 1880. At the age of 40 he became a member of the Christian Church, and was for 45 years one of its most devoted and consistent members. His rules were few and simple: Be honest; Be truthful; Do your part. Acting upon these principles through life, he left no enemies. He passed to his rest at a good old age, leaving the impression on the minds of all who knew him, that his life's work was done, and well done. (Written by his son Joseph S.
