Joe was born September 14, 1916 on the family farm south of South Heart, the son of Frank and Anna (Kubischta) Praus. He attended St. Joseph's Sisters School in Dickinson. Joe worked with his parents and siblings on the farm and also as a young man, he worked at the Kubischta Coal Mine, hauling coal to Dickinson, unloading and stacking it in homes. He received $1.00 a ton for his work. Joe enlisted in the CCC's and worked in Arkansas during this time. He was married to Martha Kubas on October 13, 1941 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Hradec. Joe worked for the Farmers Union Oil Co. where he delivered gas and managed the company. He then began working for Culp freight business which is now Midwest Motor Express. Joe worked in the freight business for 28 years. He was very proud to receive awards for 25 years of company service and accident-free and safe driving from Midwest Motor Express. Along with his work, Joe helped his father-in-law, Anton Kubas with his farm work. In August of 1977, Joe retired. Martha and Joe continued to make Dickinson their home. Joe enjoyed breaking horses with John and Val, his brothers in their younger years. Later, he enjoyed gardening, yard work, traveling, playing cards, pulling tabs and helping his neighbors. He especially loved and enjoyed his family and granddaughter, and watching basketball and baseball. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, St. Anthony Club, Teamster's Union and the German Hungarian Club. Survivors include a son, Vern (Tobie) Praus of Laughlin, NV; a brother, Frank (Sylvia) Praus, Devils Lake, ND; two sisters: Dorothy (Mike) Zentner of Bismarck, ND and Tillie "Pat" Croston of Billings, MT; a granddaughter, Michelle Praus and a great-grandson, Chason. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha; two brothers: Val and John six sisters: Christine Hoffman, Veronica Luptak, Josephine Wagner, Eleanor Robbins, Mary Luptak and Margaret Kudrna.
