Read More	MAJOR FLOOD DEAD --------- Passed Away at Buffalo Ridge Springs Major John H Flood is dead.. he passed away at Buffalo Ridge Springs Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock. For a long time his health had been failing and about a year ago he was taken to the Buffalo Ridge Springs, where he had been getting steadily worse until the final summons came. The end was not unexpected. His sufferings have been great and through the sadness of it all, there is a sense of relief that a brave soul has been removed beyond the pale of suffering. Major Flood's remains will be brought to this city this afternoon at 4 o'clock on the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad and the funeral will take place at 4:30 o'clock from the First Presbyterian Church, the interment taking place at Spring Hill Cemetery. John Henry Flood was the son of the late Colonel Thomas Henry Flood and was born in Buckingham County , now appomattox County, May 30, 1830, and is therefore over 69 years old. In his early life he was engaged for a short time in the mercantile business at Appomattox Courthouse and came to Lynchburg while yet a very young man, studied law and was admitted to the bar. He soon afterwards gave up his law to engage in the tobacco business and was a member of the firm of Flood & Crump. His next venture was as a partner with Mr. George Langhorne, and later he was a member off the firm of Flood & Peters. In later years he was engaged in the tobacco trade alone. In all these connections, and alone, he prospered, and succeeded in amassing a considerable fortune, most of which was swept away by business reverses. He was for a long time a director in the People's National Bank, was a member and president of the board of trustees of the Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum and for years a member of the City Council. He was a consistent member of the First Presbyterian Church and for years was a deacon in that church. Major Flood was a fine parliamentarian, and for years there was seldom a public meeting in Lynchburg over which he was not called to preside. Major Flood was married twice. His first wife was Miss Mary Caffee, of Gloucester County. By this union he was the father of eight children, as follows: Elizabeth, wife of Mr. Zack Jennings, and Thomas , who are dead. The surviving children are Mrs. Mary Oldham, of Louisville, Ky., John Heber, French, Nicholas, Frank, and William. His second wife, who survives him, and who was his faithful nurse during his last illness was Mrs. George Hobson. Major Flood was a typical old Virginia gentleman, and the soul of honor and integrity, true to his friends and strong in his personal likes and dislikes. His death and the long illness that led up to it, removed from the stage of action a familiar figure in Lynchburg and one for over a third of a century prominent in the business and social affairs of the city.
