The Belleville Telescope (Belleville, KS), Thursday, October 3, 1912; pg. 1 ====== An eventful career was brought to a close Tuesday afternoon when the sun of life set for our esteemed citizen, Martin Duey. He had been in poor health for several weeks, suffering from dropsy and heart trouble. A few weeks ago he was taken to the hospital at Hebron where he hoped by proper care and treatment to recover his usual good health. Instead, however, he gradually became worse, dropsy set in and about 3:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon his spirit departed to its maker. Mr. Duey was one of our most influential citizens. He had interests here in several enterprises besides those elsewhere and also owned several good farms. He came here when the country was new and by judicious buying and holding and constant labor, both in the fields and in the stock business, he has acquired considerable wealth and influence. ====== Martin Duey, son of the late Wm. and Elizabeth Duey, was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, February 11, 1851 and departed this life October 24, 1911 aged 60 years 8 months and 12 days. He moved to Macon County, Illinois and from there to McLean County, Illinois. While a resident of Illinois he was married December 23, 1879 to Martha Wolf of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, who survives him, and in 1888 moved to Chester, Nebraska. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, four brothers: John H. of Kingman County, Kansas, Joseph Z., Jacob and David P. all of Chester, Nebraska and three sisters: Mrs. Annie Kinnert (NOTE: should say Kinert) of Kingman County, Kansas, Mrs. P.A. Throne of Munden, Kansas and Mrs. John Smarsh of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Duey was converted in McLean County, Illinois in 1885 and joined the Methodist church at Harmony, Illinois and very shortly after and was an active worker from that time until his time of his death. He helped build the old Methodist church (sic) building in Chester, and was the moving spirit and largest factor in the erection of the new Methodist church building, completed in 1910, serving faithfully as a member of the building committee and giving largely of his means. His influence was always on the side of righteousness and many will testify to kindnesses shown and good deeds done in the name of the Master. He has provided a home for several orphans, not having any children of his own, and in many ways showed a willingness to help those who were deserving. He will be missed by all as he always displayed a kindly interest in everything that was done for the upbuilding (sic) of the individual and the community and especially missed by the Methodist Church of Chester of which he was a member, having joined in the year 1888 as he was a devoted attendant and always ready to testify to the saving grace of Christ, whom he loved and served. The funeral will be held Friday at two o'clock at the Methodist church (sic). Unknown newspaper or date ====== This week we are called upon to chronicle the death of one of Chester's oldest, most influential and prominent citizens of our sister city, a man who has done as much if not more for the welfare of the town than any man who may be named at this date. A man who has by his own exertions and far sightedness (sic) acquired a competency that any man in this county might envy and hope for. A man who has been true to his convictions, politically, financially and religiously. A man who will be missed by everybody, and was beloved and respected by all who knew him. Whatever his failings they were overlooked when his deeds of kindness and generosity were presented to view, and these were many and far reaching. No one knew the extent to which he contributed to the church, the suffering and the unfortunate, and his way to the promised land is clear if his past life counts for anything. Mr. Duey has been a tireless worker all his life, nothing too hard or too large for his accomplishment but of late years his friends could see a failing, and when he was brought to Hebron a few weeks ago for treatment all could see that the end was not far off, and the worst was looked for. He died Wednesday, October 24, 1911, at 3:20 p.m. at the age of 60 years, 9 months and 22 days. The remains were taken to the undertaking establishment of W.M. Hill, where an autopsy was made by Drs. Boyes, Taylor and Squires, and it was found that the abdomen had a superfluity of fatty matter that hindered the required action of the intestines and the death was caused by smothering, the functions not having the required action to perform the necessary duties. Martin Duey was born in Cumberland county (sic), Pennsylvania, February 22, 1851; He was married to Miss Martha Wolff (sic), at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in 1878, and moved to the town where he has made his home ever since in 1888. There were no children as to the fruit of this union. His estate, which was large was left to the entire care of his wife. He was the oldest in the family of seven boys and six girls, four boys and three girls of whom are now living. Besides these and his widow he leaves a legion of friends to mourn his loss. Owing to his relatives being at a distance the time of the funeral is not yet known, but it will probably be held today at Chester.
