Mr. Joseph Duey, Former Resident of this County, Entertained by Many Friends. Mr. Joseph Duey, a former resident of Middlesex township, this county, who twenty years ago moved west, on Friday evening celebrated his fiftieth birthday and was entertained by nearly one hundred of his friends. Mr. and Mrs. Duey are well known in Carlisle and vicinity. Mr. Duey is a son of the late Wm. Duey, who for many years resided near Carlisle Springs and in Plainfield. Mrs. Duey is a daughter of the late David Wolf, of Middlesex township, and a sister of John and Joseph Wolf, of the same township. The following account of the affair is taken from the Chester Herald, of Chester, Nebraska, at which place Mr. Duey and family reside: Friday evening, at the instigation and upon the invitation of his wife, a company of ninety assembled at the palatial home of Joseph Duey (relatives, neighbors and friends), to assist him in passing the evening pleasantly as well as to remind him that the "days are gliding swiftly by" and he was about to venture out upon the second half century of his earthly existence, having fully rounded out the first fifty years. The worthy couple have lived in this community for nearly twenty years, having moved here in February, 1886, settling upon a piece of raw land, in Republic county (sic), Kansas, just south of Chester, which now stands as one of the best improved and most valuable farms in this section of the country. After seventeen years of strict economy and faithful attention to business, they acquired quite a competency, and three years ago they turned their land and belonging over to their two sons and moved to Chester to pass the remainder of their days in affluence, peace and plenty. They are among our most esteemed and influential citizens, and it is only a just retribution that the citizens should have assembled upon this memorable occasion to help Brother Duey start out right upon the second half century of his existence. The evening was spent in the usual way of these occasions - social chit-chat, masculine and feminine conversation, and general congratulations. At the appointed time W.W. Cameron called the convention to order, and bringing the honorable host before the assembled multitude, proceeded to administer unto Mr. Duey a well-deserved drubbing in the shape of a most beautiful rocker in behalf of the neighbors and friends; an elegant upholstered standard rocker from the sons, and a magnificent book case from the good wife who has been his helpmeet (sic) and shared his sorrows and prosperity, lo, these many years. Later in the evening a light lunch consisting of strawberry ice cream, cake and grapes were served, and when the hour of midnight "tolled the knell of parting day," the company, after wishing the host "Many Happy Returns of the Day," and thanking the good wife for the evening's entertainment, adjourned unto their several homes and their own quiet firesides. ================================ The Sentinel (Carlisle, PA), Thursday, December 30, 1909; pg. 6 Miss Dorothy E., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zachariah (sic) Hafer, of Shippensburg, and J.J. (sic) Duey, of Chester, Nebraska, were united in the bonds of holy matrimony on Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Tawneyown, Md., by Rev. D.J. Wolf. The happy couple will leave in the near future for Nebraska, where they expect to make their future home. ======================= Adams County Independent (Littlestown, PA), Friday, December 31, 1909; pg. 1 NEWS HAPPENINGS OF THE PAST WEEK FROM TANEYTOWN Mr. Joseph Duey, a wealthy farmer, of Chester, Nebraska, spent a few days here last week as the guest of his nephew, Rev. D.J. Wolf. Whilst here Mr. Duey was united in marriage to Miss Dorothy E. Hafner, of Shippensburg, who accompanied him from that town. Mr. Duey says that for the last month Nebraska has been in the throes of an old-time winter. He also stated that land in the West was rising in value and a farm containing land of ordinary quality could not be bought for less than $100 per acre. ======================================== The Hebron Journal-Register (Hebron, NE), Friday, November 28, 1919; pg. 1 Joseph Duey Dead On Wednesday afternoon occured (sic) the death of Joseph Duey of Chester who had been ill for a long time. Joseph Duey was about 83 years old and an old settler, widely known throughout the country. Many will be sorry to know of his death. =================================== The Hebron Journal (Hebron, NE), Friday, December 5, 1919; pg. 6 DEATH OF JOSEPH DUEY Joseph Duey was born near Carlisle, Pa., Otc. (sic) 6, 1855. He moved to Chester in 1885, where he has lived up to the time of his death, November 26, 1919. Mr. Duey has been in poor health for about four years. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, three sons, Charles, William P., and Blaine, and one daughter, Marie, besides three brother (sic), three sisters and other relatives and friends. The funeral was held Saturday at the Methodist church, of which the deceased was a member.
