Description	:	John H. Duey, Resident of this Community for Thirty-Eight Years Dies Friday. John Duey, Pioneer Resident of this community was called by death last Friday morning after an illness of two months. Mr. Duey moved to this community in 1891 and has been a resident of this vicinity ever since. The funeral was held Monday at the Methodist church (sic), burial was in the Chester Cemetery. Mr. Duey died after suffering from a paraletic (sic) stroke, from which he never recovered. OBITUARY John H. Duey was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, near the village of Carlisle, on August 26, 1852 and passed away near Chester Nebraska on December 20, 1929; age 77 years, 3 months and 24 days. While a young man he was engaged in farming, interspersed with school teaching. For ten terms he taught in his own district or near by in Pennsylvania, and two terms near Decatur, Ill. He was married to Mary E. Wetzel on January 15, 1878 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. His beloved wife preceded him in death thirty six years ago. To this union were born four children, Jacob W., Amos J., Charles M. Duey, and Elizabeth Duey Norman, all of Chester. Besides these children, two brothers Jacob and Park Duey and two sisters Mrs. Phil Throne and Mrs. John Smarsh survive from an original family of thirteen to mourn the going of their brother and father and friend, and three grandchildren. In March, 1891, he aand (sic) his family moved to Chester Community where he engaged in farming. In April, 1893, he laid away his beloved wife and helpmate. In November, 1901, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Rachael Page and moved near Kingman, Kansas where he lost his wife by death in December 1912. In October, 1917, he retired from active farming and turned the farming business over to his sons. In November, 1926, he suffered from a paralytic stroke followed by another ont (sic)in February, 1928. These two serious setbacks in physical health, left him nearly blind and very weak. He has been on the bring (sic) of death for several months apparently recovering for a few days and becoming stronger but always to slip back into a weaker condition. As a father and friend we have all too few his equal. Uncle John Duey, by which name he was known and beloved by the entire community became a Christian and nuited (sic) with the Reformed church (sic) in Pennsylvania, but upon locating at Chester, Nebraska he joined the Methodist Episcopal church (sic) here. He was a sincere Christian and impressed his pastor and the world about him with his devotion to the life in Christ. We bury his mortal body today but we have absolute faith that his immortal soul is with his Lord and Master whom he loved and served. Chester Herald, unknown date
