Description	:	Mary E. Ford Crane, 87, of Delphi, Indiana formerly of Alvin, Illinois, died at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, August 30, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center in Delphi. Born in Warren County, Indiana, September 20, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Minnie Thorton Ford. She attended nursing school in Kankakee, Illinois, and lived in Alvin for 25 years before moving to Delphi. Her husband, Joseph O. Crane, preceded her in death. Ford Crane, 87, of Delphi, Indiana formerly of Alvin, Illinois, died at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, August 30, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center in Delphi. Born in Warren County, Indiana, September 20, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Minnie Thorton Ford. Mrs. Crane was a nurse at Lakeview Hospital in Danville, Illinois. Following is an interview done by Mamaquilts (#47164329) Done in Alvin Ill, in Mar 1998 for a folklore class. M= We always used to go out to uhm oh like May or something out to Grandma Ford's. I don't know if that was Mother's Day or uhm wedding anniversary or what. And when we would all get together, why, uhm we would have homemade ice cream. Grandma Ford was a family person. She liked to have her well my uah gosh, up until I got married and every thing I why we, and my Dad birthday was uh 3rd of March. Aunt Abbie and them would come up and we would have a birthday dinner. We all , I always said you could depend on the Fords for wakes and weddings. You know when I was growing up and every thing , why when somebody died by George you know the family was there and uh Aunt Flossie and Uncle Harley they were, you know. In fact, they had a little house there in Pence and I lived in it for World War Two, while the kids Dad was in the Navy. And then Uncle Harley's folks was, Goodwines They were big land owners right their north Pence. I don't know if you ever heard of them speak of the ol' brick house. Now its gone. It was a great big brick house. L= So when you guys would make ice cream, for the reunion. I know that when we would make ice cream we had an electric ice M= Oh heaven sake this was a crank it was when I was a kid thats seventy years ago. And you would get ice and you would put salt on it for some reason. I don't know if that made it melt or what. You would crack it all up and you had a can it was a tall wooden bucket like. And there was a metal thing that set down in the center of it and you would pack ice around it. And there was a crank on it, and it made the thing in the, paddle in the middle of it. You would keep it turning until the last of it froze. L= Was it vanilla or did they make different flavors M= Generally vanilla. L= So how would she, I mean M= She would use whip cream, milk and eggs and junket at that time, ol junket tablets. I don't know if it made it a custard out of it I don't, not sure what it did. Vanilla Oh it was always good, we always (unknown).Grandma Ford was a good cook. And I can remember something else, She could make the best biscuits and gravy. And she always called it egg butter. Never heard of anybody else making it or anything. And she would take molasses and pancake minute brand syrup pancake syrup. Oh then she would put it in a skillet and beat up, I don't know, six or eight eggs beat em up I don't, then heat up the syrup and then stir in the beaten up eggs and put in nutmeg or something in it and oh boy you would use the biscuits to dip in it and use it like applebutter or something like it. L=uhn M= I never heard tell of anyone else ever doing something like that. And finally, I'm not a pie maker, I've done a lot of cooking in my time but I can't make good pie crust. It must have been the first pecan pie I ever made, and when I was mixing it up and it was like this is like Grandma Ford made egg butter. I suppose, Well you know then, you didn't run to the grocery store and maybe in the spring after your jelly and stuff began to run out and chickens began to lay eggs why you would make egg butter.
