Read More	His obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, September 17, 1909. Oscar Slates was born in Loudon Township, Carroll County, June 5, 1857, and died at the home of D. B. Miller August 18, 1909, aged 52 years, 2 months, 13 days. Four children -- three sons and one daughter, are left to mourn the loss of their father. Five brothers and three sisters survive. He was always a kind and affectionate parent and was beloved by all who knew him. His home had recently been in Adena but owing to sickness he removed to the home of his sister, Mrs. D. B. Miller of Kilgore, where he lived for two years, attended by Dr. Harding, until the dreaded diseases, cancer of the stomach, ended his life. Twenty-four years ago he united with the Friends Church at West Grove and always took great interest in all that related to the church and its welfare. He lived a pious and upright life, satisfied with the allotment of each day, and could truthfully say, " My Lord, They will be done." Mr. Slates will always be remembered as a true Christian and friend, with help ever ready for those in distress. His funeral service was conducted by Rev. Milam, pastor of the Methodist church of Kilgore. His body was laid to rest in the Kilgore Cemetery.
