Yes, my father's name was Olive. Mom was born Carrie Wilhelmina Sillix but from youth was called Little Bill and later Billie. The first time Olive and Billie went to California was in the fall of 1930. They had car trouble along the way, left their car at a garage in Nevada and hitchhiked the rest of the way to Los Angeles where Billie's brother, Jack, was living. Olive couldn't find work; Billie said they would have starved if her brother and his wife hadn't fed them. Jack and his wife worked for the same family, he as a chauffeur and Frankie as a cook. When Frankie would shop for the family groceries she would include food for Olive and Billie. They hitchhiked home to Oklahoma in April of 1931, less than a month before their first child was born. There was no work in Oklahoma. They scraped by. One Halloween Olive spent the night sitting on the town water tower so mischief makers would not turn it over. That paid their delinquent water bill. The only time they had a satisfying meal was when they went to Billie's mother for dinner. Grandmother Sillix grew most of her own food. She had a huge garden and lots of chickens. Though she owned two farms (the Dungan homestead and the Sillix homestead), she lived in a big white house in Perkins, Oklahoma. Olive and Billie went back to California in the late 1930's with their then three children, "W.B.", Mary Jo and June. There were 10 people piled on top of one another (Olive, Billie, W.B., Mary Jo, June, with Olive's sister Vida and her husband Jim Sipe and their children, Mildred, Ray & Jim) in a Model A Ford, with a tent that attached to the side for sleeping. This time they went to central California, the San Joaquin Valley. They lived on ranches in San Joaquin County, before moving to Tranquility, where their fourth child, Carol, was born. One day my brother, when still a very small boy not yet old enough for school, pleaded to be allowed to work with the rest of the family; they were picking cotton. He was fitted with a small sack and worked all morning. When they stopped for lunch their bags were weighed and the workers were paid. My brother was handed a dime. He was so excited showing his dime to all who would pay attention. My mother smiled, saying "Oh, isn't that nice, now you can help buy lunch," as she took the dime from his hand. I wasn't born yet (my brother was 12 years older than I) so I wasn't there to see his expression, but with his telling of the story I can still see remints of what must have been his incredulous expression when his hard-earned dime was whisked away. Olive learned to weld as part of a government training program. They were still living in Tranquility when their fifth child, Patricia, was born in Bakersfield. They later moved to Castroville, California. While still living in Castroville, there last child, Dolores, was born in nearby Salinas. When I was in Junior High School I told my mother that I loved the book, Grapes of Wrath. She said, "Yes, it is a good book, but remember, it is fiction. I lived through the migration and my experience was unlike most of what was written in that book." She explained that times were hard and, yes, wages were low, but they got by and in time prospered. I am sure there were cases of unscrupulous farmers that tried to take advantage of the plight of these folks, but for the most part the farmers of California were hardworking, honest people trying their best to stay afloat during a time that was hard for everyone. At best only about 10% of what was written in "The Grapes of Wrath" may have accidentally been true. This was not an exposé or a fictionalized documentary but a well written, entertaining, work of fiction.
