Spouse = John Sass Maiden Name = Sophie Marie Kroeger Obituary The Hooper Sentinel November 8, 1923 Aged Pioneer Woman Passes Away Monday Mrs. Sophie Marie Sass, relict of the late John Sass, and for fifty six years a resident of this vicinity, passed peacefully away at the home of her son, Christ, the old homestead, at 12:30 Monday morning, November 5. Infirmities due to old age was the cause of her death. She had attained the ripe old age of 83 years, 2 months and 9 days. Mrs. Sass was a native of Germany, and as Sophie Maria Kroeger she was born in Mecklenburg Schwerin on August 25, 1840. There she grew to womanhood and in 1865 was married to John Sass who died March 13, 1896. November 9, 1867, saw the arrival of herself and family in this locality, they homesteading on the farm that is now occupied by her son, Christ, north of Hooper. With the exception of eight years spent with another son in Cuming county, this homestead had been her home ever since coming here. As a pioneer she bravely bore the hardships of those early days and did her part in the establishment of the new home in the land of freedom. She was of a gentle and kindly disposition and a home lover, and these traits of character greatly endeared her to her friends of the old as well as of the later days. She was the mother of eight children, four sons and four daughters, one son dying in Germany and one son and two daughters answering the summons here. The living children are Mrs. Sophia Raasch and Mrs. Mary Munderloh of Beemer, Christ Sass of Hooper and August Sass of Denver. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Uehling in California, one brother, Christoph Kroeger of Hartford, S. D, twenty six grandchildren and thirty six great grandchildren. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon, with short services at one o'clock at the home of her son and at two o'clock at the St. Johns Ev. Lutheran church, Rev. Theodore Norden speaking the words of comfort to the sorrowing relatives and many friends who assembled there to pay their last respects to the memory of the departed. Six grandson, John, Harold, August and Joseph Sass, John Raasch and Robert Munderloh, acted as pallbearers. Interment was made in the church cemetery.
