Description	:	Veronica Elizabeth Bechtel O'Brien, formerly of Fort Madison and Keokuk, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, in West Melbourne, Fla. Born Aug. 22, 1915, in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, she was the daughter of Cyrus and Anna McElgun Bechtel. In 1939, she married James F. O'Brien in Grafton, N.D. He died in 1988. Mrs. O'Brien was a real estate mortgage officer at Downers Grove National Bank in Downers Grove, Ill., retiring in 1982. Read More	Veronica Elizabeth Bechtel O'Brien, formerly of Fort Madison and Keokuk, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, in West Melbourne, Fla. Born Aug. 22, 1915, in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, she was the daughter of Cyrus and Anna McElgun Bechtel. In 1939, she married James F. O'Brien in Grafton, N.D. He died in 1988. Mrs. O'Brien was a real estate mortgage officer at Downers Grove National Bank in Downers Grove, Ill., retiring in 1982. She previously worked for Rural Resettlement Administration and abstract companies in North Dakota, where her family had moved when she was 5. During World War II, she worked as a secretary at Thomas Truck and Castor Company in Iowa. In 1949, she and her husband bought Keokuk Abstract and Title Co., which they operated until 1967. She also co-owned and operated C. H. Rollins and Co. In 1991, she moved to Indian Harbor Beach, Fla. She became a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Indialantic, Fla. She was an involved member of the Democratic Party, who was a hostess to governors, senators, labor leaders and state and national American Legion Commanders during her husband's tenure as mayor of Keokuk. She was a 50-year member and president of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as chairwoman for its annual poppy drive. She also was chairwoman for shamrock sales at Cardinal Stritch High School, worked on its building fund drive and was a chaperone for CSHS trips to Chicago and Milwaukee. She belonged to Business and Professional Women, served on the YM-YWCA Board of Directors and volunteered with Community Chest, Heart Fund and the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Nash of St. Louis and Maureen Creswick of Indialantic; one son, Patrick O'Brien of Port Richey, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Richard Bechtel of Cathedral City, Calif., and Donald Bechtel of Corona, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Greaves Mortuary in Keokuk, where a vigil service will be at 4 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. O'Brien will be at 9 a.m. Monday at All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk with the Rev.
