Matthews conducted the services. A large number of friends and relatives were in attendance to pay their last respects. The deceased was a farmer in Audubon county during the eighties and nineties, but leased his farm or farms and moved to Coon Rapids about twenty years ago to educate his family, thus securing for all his children a good education, some of them afterward taking a college course. He was a man of pretty strong convictions and was not easily influenced away from his opinions once formed. He served the town well on the town council and in other capacities, his work always being honorable to a degree. He accumulated a competence and in many ways served as a good example. He was strongly attached to his family and assisted his children in their ambitions. While not a church or lodge man his life was morally clean and upright, and if "religion is a life" as is now being taught by many religious teachers, his life was a Christian life. The community was certainly made better through his having lived. Andrew Wilson Bowman was born January 27, 1848, near New London, Ashland county, Ohio, being the son of Alex Bowman, his father and mother being immigrants from Fofar county Scotland. Mr. Bowman came to Iowa with his parents in 1860. The railroad at that time only came as far as Keokuk and the immigrants traveled overland to Montezuma where they located. Mr. Bowman grew to manhood in Poweshiek county and was married at Montezuma, June 13, 1874, to Miss Lizzie Davis, who survives him. This union was blessed with several children all of whom grew to maturity and are still living. Deceased moved to Audubon county in 1880 and was one of the pioneers of Viola township. The original 160 acres were added to until 400 acres were acquired. Moved to Coon Rapids 1897. The members of the family present at the last rites were J. Edward Bowman of Viola, Mrs. Grace Jones of Coon Rapids, Mrs. Bonnie Ford of Coon Rapids, Chas. Barton Bowman of the Iowa Savings Bank, Coon Rapids, Ralph C. Bowman of the County Auditor's office, Carroll, Iowa, Mrs. Jennie Price of Dexter, Iowa, and Miss Nellie Bowman of the High school Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Ardon Bowman, a school boy.
