The sermon was benefitting and touching in nature and the male quartet provided the songs. All through the ceremony was of an impressive nature, the public notably feeling deeply the cruel tragedy which so suddenly took the life of an honored and prominent citizen. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, relatives, the bank of which he had been cashier for several years, and the societies to which he belonged, paying tribute with beautiful floral emblems, wreaths and sprays. At the conclusion of the services, the remains were laid to rest in the Coon Rapids Cemetery. But little in the way of details regarding the accident which resulted in death has been learned. Mr. Bowman was driving home from a trip to Storm Lake and with it when if then the mile or so of Carroll on Primary 18, he struck a stretch of icy road, probably coming onto it unexpectedly, when his car began to skid. After doing this for 40 or 50 feet, one of the rear wheels broke apparently causing the car to turn over and evidently with considerable force, throwing Mr. Bowman violently as it seems against the steering gear wheel and front of car. The body showed a large lump over the heart, caused by hard contact with the wheel, apparently and the neck and the side of face also showed injury. The car may have been going at a rather high speed and it may not have been. No one saw the accident. It appears that two drivers of cars passed the wreck without stopping, probably thinking it an abandoned car, but the third man in a car to pass the wreck, stopped and discovered Mr. Bowman in the car dead. Death was evidently instantaneous. The coroner held an inquest, the verdict being that the deceased met death by car accident. As stated last week in a hurried written report of the accident, as we went to press, the deceased was born in the locality, graduated from our public schools, after which he served for two years as deputy postmaster: then took a law course at Ann Arbor University after which he practiced law at Story City, then at Scranton, finally returning to Coon Rapids and becoming assistant cashier of the Iowa Savings Bank and two years or so ago being advanced to the position of cashier. He was also town clerk and town councilman, filling all positions with credit and efficiency. He was of active temperament: whatever he undertook was pursued with all the energy of his nature, and a day's work with him was anywhere from 10 to 12 and 18 hours. His interests were centered deeply in his family and business. He was also of a studious nature and took unusual interest in the Study Club of which he was an original member. Not only his family and relatives will miss him greatly but his associates also. The tragedy of his death has cast sorrow over the community and the deepest sympathy if everyone goes out toward the afflicted family and relatives. The following obituary by a relative has furnished us. Charles Barton Bowman was born December 17th, 1881 in Viola Township, Audubon County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Bowman. He died at Carroll, Iowa, December 18th, 1924, aged 43 years and one day. As a boy he attended the country schools of Viola and after his parents moved to Coon Rapids in 1896 attended the high school, graduating in the class of 1901. He was employed in the post office under Mr. S. D. Henry for several months, then matriculated in the law department at the University of Michigan graduating there from in 1906. He practiced in Scranton for a year with B. O. Clarke, then located at Story City, remaining there two years. After selling out there, he returned to Coon Rapids and entered the Iowa Savings Bank where he has been for 16 years, the last two years having been cashier. Mr. Bowman was married June 19th, 1912 to Lelah Hasbrook of Woodbine, Iowa, into this union were born three children, Beverly, 11 years old, Kenneth, 10 years old and Janet, eight years old at the time of their father's death. Besides the widow and children, the deceased leaves an aged mother, one brother, Ralph C., and four sisters Mrs. John F. Jones of Coon Rapids, Miss Nellie Bowman of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mrs. Carl V. Ford of Storm Lake and Mrs. Charles E. Price of Dexter.
