For forty years Ralph has been one of the best-known and best-loved men of this community. Being a bachelor, he considered the whole Coon Rapids community as his family and devoted his time and talent to boosting the town and aiding his friends. Ralph loved athletics. In his younger days he managed baseball and football teams and was always on hand to back up school athletic activities. He aided in promoting many town celebrations. "Pus" had a knack for remembering names, faces and events. He knew everyone in the community and kept in contact with former residents here. He was the friend of everyone, and everyone was his friend. Whenever his name went on a ballot, he was practically sure of election. Ralph Bowman is gone. When old-timers come back for reunions, they will miss his greeting and his "remember when?" He will be missed at all his familiar haunts and local business houses and he will be missed at the Enterprise office where he was a regular visitor and where he proved an encyclopedia of local dates and events. Ralph Clifford Bowman was born in Audubon County, Iowa, April 2nd,1880 the son of Andrew Wilson Bowman and his wife, Lizzie Bowman. As a small boy he came with his parents to a farm in Viola Township where he grew up. He graduated from the Viola 8th grade school March 20, 1895 and from Coon Rapids High School May 28, 1898. Later he attended Simpson College at Indianola. Ralph taught country schools a number of years. Later he was employed in clerical work by the Milwaukee Road here. For a time, he held a deputy's position at the courthouse in Carroll. For many years he has been town assessor and a justice of the peace. Troubled with poor health much of his life he suffered a stroke some years ago from which he only partly recovered. He suffered another stroke at the hospital Sunday and another stroke Wednesday snuffed out the last spark of life. Two brothers, James Edward, and Charles Barton, and a sister, Mrs. Grace Jones, preceded him in death. He is survived by three sisters, Miss Nellie Bowman of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mrs. Bonnie Ford of Storm Lake and Mrs. Jennie Price of Des Moines. Ralph's closest friend was a nephew, Ardon E. Bowman of Minneapolis, Minn. The funeral will be at the Coder Funeral Home this afternoon at 2 p.m. Pallbearers will be Dale P. Carpenter, R. E. Dixon, H. H. Dollarhide, Orrin J. Oliver, Wayne C. Textor and John J. Rogers.
