| Description | : | Charles Gardner became and orphan early in our tradition when his father died when he was only 6 years old and his mother died 8 years later. He was raised for a time by an uncle until he ran away to sea with an uncle Peter who was a skipper on a Whaler. He spent about 12 years at sea, having gone around Cape Horn 3 times.
