Description	:	Clark served in the Civil War in the same unit as my gg grandfather Phillip Harding. I have letters that Phillip wrote home, that talked about Clark. Clark 1st served in Company D 80th Ohio Infantry, enlisted Dec 9, 1861, discharged disabled at Corinth, Miss. June 22, 1862. In the 1900 census, Clark and his family were living in Loudon Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio. Clark was listed as age 55 born February 1845 in Ohio, his wife Emma D. age 53 born March 1847 in Ohio, their son Elmer was living with them he was listed as, widowed, age 30 born October 1869 in Ohio. Their daughter Minnie age 32 born June 1867 in Ohio, and her husband George M. Davis age 35 born September 1864 in Ohio, and their two children; Loyd Davis age 7 born August 1892 and Florence Davis age 10 born January 1890, both born in Ohio. His obituary in the Free Press Standard, Carrollton, Ohio, Thursday, June 11, 1914. After in illness of about 11 weeks, Clark Slates died Friday night in his home north of town. He was born February 17, 1844, at Kilgore, and was married March 22, 1866, to Emeline James. Three children were born to them, and all survive along with Mrs. Slates; Mrs. George Davis, of Kilgore; Mrs. O. S. Bancroft, of Dale, New York, and Elmer E. Slates, north of town. Mr. Slates enlisted December 9, 1861, in Co. D, 80 O. V. I. and was discharged June 22, 1862, at Corinth, Mississippi, on surgeon's certificate of disability. A funeral service was held in the family home on Sunday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Parren U. Hawkins, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and another service was held Monday morning in his old church at Kilgore, Rev. Hawkins, of Carrollton, and Stahl, of Harlem Springs officiating. At the request of the deceased, 18 soldiers conducted the ritual at the grave, and there buried the stars and strips with their comrade. Last Friday night at 8 o'clock the messenger of death came to the home of Clark Slates, near Carrollton, and called the kind neighbor, noble husband and loving father to his heavenly home. He had been a patient sufferer for about eleven weeks. when the minister came and read and prayed with him, he said he had nothing to fear, all was glory and was only waiting for the summons. In the last few weeks of his life it was beautiful to hear the loving words of counsel and the vision of heaven he had as he talked to those around him. Surely it was a message to the loved ones, long to be remembered and to prepare to meet him in the heavenly home. He was born February 17, 1844, and departed this life June 5, 1914. He was married to Emeline James, March 22, 1866 by Rev. Conner. To this union were born three children, all of whom are living: Mrs. George Davis, of Kilgore; Mrs. Rev. O. S. Bancroft, of Dale, New York and Elmer Slates, of Carrollton. Besides these children he leaves a loving kind wife, six grandchildren, all of whom are living except, one, Dear Florence, who has gone to her heavenly home. Three brothers, two sisters, and a host of neighbors and friends to mourn his death. He enlisted in the Company D, 80th O.V.I., in 1861, and fought as a good soldier for our country. A service for the neighbors and friends was held at the home on Sunday afternoon, June 7, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Parren U. Hawkins. Another service was held on the following morning in Kilgore, his old home church, led by Rev. Hawkins, and Rev. Stahl, of Harlem Springs, and the soldiers 18 in all, by the deceased request, had their ritual at the grave in the Kilgore cemetery and there buried the stars and strips with there comrade and laid him to rest to wait the resurrection morn.
