Description	:	Evelyn Skiles, 97, of Holdrege died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Evelyn was born Aug. 19, 1913, at Modesto, Calif., to Walter B. and Bessie (Gibson) Meyer. On May 28, 1939, she married Orval Skiles in Alma. He died March 1, 1984. Read More	Evelyn Skiles, 97, of Holdrege died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Evelyn was born Aug. 19, 1913, at Modesto, Calif., to Walter B. and Bessie (Gibson) Meyer. On May 28, 1939, she married Orval Skiles in Alma. He died March 1, 1984. Survivors include her daughter, Susan Graf and her husband, Jay, of rural Alma; son, Brad and his wife, Rita, of the family home near Huntley; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Laura Graf, James and Kendra Graf and their daughter Maloree, Mark and Nicol Skiles and their daughters Peyton and Taylor, Brent and Amanda Skiles and their children Gavin, Olivia, Harrison and Norah, and Andrea Skiles Nitchie and her husband Jason and their children Clemens and Ada; sisters, Bonnie Williams of Holdrege and Betty Spahn of Spokane, Wash.; several much loved nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends. She was the first of five children in her family. Evelyn accepted the Lord as her savior when she was 12 years old at the Evangelical Church in Alma. She attended schools at Alma where she graduated from high school with the class of 1930, at age 16, as salutatorian of her class. Having completed normal training in high school, she started teaching at age 17. She taught at Rural School District 23 south of Orleans and Rural District 62 east of Huntley for four years. She then taught five years at Alma. She and Orval were married at the Evangelical Church in Alma. They resided in Gibbon from 1939 until 1943. They resided on their farm east of Huntley from 1943 until 1971 when they moved to Alma. After her children were raised, Evelyn again taught school for another 18 years. During this time she went to college at Kearney State Teachers College and received her bachelor of arts degree when she was 57 years old. She had taught for a total of 27 years. After Orval's death, Evelyn moved to Kearney where she resided until 1997 when she moved to Holdrege. She had resided at Holdrege Memorial Homes since December 2001. Evelyn was a member of Huntley Methodist Church and later Alma Evangelical Free Church. She was a member of the Harlan County Barbershop Chorus for several years, Alma P.E.O. chapter B.J. and a pinochle club in Alma while residing there. She enjoyed traveling and traveled quite extensively when her health permitted. Evelyn enjoyed reading and liked to learn. She was an avid student. Evelyn was quite an artist and completed several oil paintings. She took her U.S. citizenship seriously and always voted. She was also one who enjoyed helping the needy and made several gifts to the needy. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father on Feb. 3, 1932; stepfather, William Blum on Jan. 30, 1941; her mother on Jan. 1, 1971; sisters, Margaret Cain and her husband, Robert, and Irene Snyder and her husband, Joseph; triplet grandchildren, Sophia, Clara and Owen Skiles; and brothers-in-law, Norville Williams and Reuben Spahn.
